Please help, about Cornell and Carnegie

Hi, my friend has been accepted to Cornell and Carnegie but for Cornell she'll only have to pay about $10000 whereas for Carnegie she'll have to pay $25000. However, she would rather go to Carnegie than Cornell so I have a question if it is possible to inform Carnegie of Cornell's offer and ask if they could make a match. Does anyone know if this is possible? I know of someone who made a deal with Columbia and Duke this way but can this be done with Carnegie and Cornell too?

Thanks for your help.

are you kidding me? 99.9 percent of people would agree to go to a top ranked ivy over some random school in pennsylvania. is this even a real post?!! are you just trying to give carnegie mellon some kind of credibility? the only thing carnegie mellon is good for is its graduate computer science program.

Carnegie Mellon is not some random school in pennsylvania, in fact Carnegie is well known b/c of the students that major in engineering. My friend is about to turn down Columbia for Mellon. Ivy leagues are not everything. Your friend will be at this school for four year and should enjoy the experience, I vote for Carnegie.

I vote for Cornell, it’s engineering program is ranked higher, and it’s hard to pass up the opportunity to save all of that money. Either way though, they can’t go wrong. Two great schools.

Carnegie Mellon openly matches all financial aid offers, I’m pretty sure.

Definitely call them up b/c you have nothing to lose just don’t say your name if you don’t want to. Sometimes happiness is priceless or maybe $15000 more. Best of luck.

carnegie mellon is one of the top ranked engineering schools in the country, aka definitely not just some random school in pa. and yes, your friend can appeal financial aid and try to get carnegie to match cornell’s offer. he/she probably has a decent chance of getting it too.

Just because Cornell is an Ivy, doesn’t make it better than “Carnegie Mellon, the random school in PA”. Carnegie Mellon has some programs that outrank Cornell such as computer science and electrical engineering.

I had this same problem last year. Cornell had given me way more money than Carnegie Mellon, but I had been hoping to go to CMU. I did send CMU a copy of Cornell’s offer, but they could in no way match the aid Cornell gave me, although they did increase the amount of grant I got by approximately $3000. Cornell’s aid was too good to resist, so I decided on Cornell.

I’m also studying engineering, and honestly, yes, Cornell’s program is higher than CMU’s, but only by ONE spot. So really, it depends on what type of engineering you’re going into. CMU has better comp. sci for sure. The other programs I’m not sure how they stack…

In the end, it depends on how much she’s willing to pay and how much she likes CMU over Cornell.

Good luck!

Yeah, many non-Ivies are not able to match the offers that Ivies give, just like Cornell would probably not be able to match HYP.
