Please help an oos with UC a-g

First off, I'm oos so my high school doesn't have courses classified under the a-g requirements I'm so confused on this section even after reading all the stuff I could find. First off, for the course names, should I put what's on my transcript or what the course is (e.g. H Eng Pre-AP 2 versus English 2 with honors selected on the drop down menu)? Second, I'm confused with classifying my courses. Am I supposed to only mark History/English/Math as the type of course for only the required number of courses in those sections and list the other courses that would fall under those categories as "G-College Prep Electives"? Third, for other courses that don't really fall anywhere do I just list them under college prep? I'm enrolled in courses like Scholars (which is focused around visiting plays/music/movies/stuff and writing about some of them) and Contemporary Issues (a class that discuses and focuses on anything from history to science to current events to film etc., but doesn't do much writing/testing)? Is this just left up to my discretion?

Please help me, I'm so confused and I want to go to a UC.

What I'm doing is, I'm making sure that once I am accepted and have sent in my transcript, they won't call me up and be like "Uhhh, you lied on your application." That's really the most important part.

But how are you doing this??

Just make what you report look like what it says on your transcript. So if your transcipt says Honors English... well, the say it was an English class that was an honors class. The UCs won't question that.

No, you put the all courses under the appropriate heading. For example, Alg I, Geom, and Alg II are required math courses for admission. Pre-calc and Calc are not required, but you would still list them under Math.

For g electives, they need to be academic courses, so things like Driver's Ed, Health & Photography don't count. But, Scholars and Contemporary Issues might be a g electives -- it'll be up to the UC reader to decide (OOS apps have separate readers who supposedly are knowledgeable about OOS high school curriculums).

btw: Most Frosh and Soph courses don't count as UC-approved honors courses, nor does honors Alg II.

If the readers don't think a course I put as "g" qualifies, or if I make a mistake with designating honors (I'm trying not to btw), will this hurt me?

And additionally, do you think I should simply list the exact name that applies on my transcript? What I'm debating is whether I should put the phrase "pre-ap" which appears for a lot of courses on my transcript in the course name.

For example, my transcript lists courses like:
H AP English 3 (put this or AP English Composition?)
H Eng Pre-AP 2
H W Hist Pre-AP

they won't hold it against you if you make a mistake, since it does happen frequently, and they won't expect you to know how UC would approve of your transcript. Just do your best. You can also call the helpline on the '800' number. I would err on the side of too much information.

There are two AP english courses, so you need to know which one - Comp or Lit. The Pre-ap honors course would likely by UC-approved for honors. If the WHist course is a Frosh or Soph course, it probably would not be UC-approved honors course -- it depends on whether it has a pre-req.

Good luck.

do all 9th grade courses have to be designated as non-honors?

as a general rule, yes. But, Honors Pre-calc (or Calc) taken Frosh year = Honors. All AP courses, by definition, are UC honors courses. But, Frosh Honors Bio, Honors History, honors english, honors history, negative.

Quick question (I'm also applying to a UC oos)...
Do I just leave Phys. Ed + electives like Yearbook and Anatomy off? They don't seem to fit into any of the categories.

anatomy can be a science elective, so I'd put it down. Phys Ed is out. Not sure about Yearbook.

If you are in-state, you can check your HS a-g courses at:

http://www.ucop.edu/doorways/

k thanks...I"m out-of-state. I think I'll just leave Yearbook off.

I looked up our HS -- we offer Anatomy-Physiology (two semesters) and it is indeed a science elective. Our HS Yearbook class is not on the a-g list, but the school newspaper is a 'g' elective.

Good luck to you OOS'ers.
