Whenever something weird happens to you online, that is a sign that it is time to change your passwords.
I have taken measures to secure my system but I still find it difficult to believe that it was compromised. My counselor, parents, and I have discussed and believe we should report it to the proper authorities, whoever that may be.
I find it even harder to believe it was a friend or family member, however misdirected. What could they gain by commenting under a uva.edu email address instead of telling me directly? Why choose UVA?
Regardless, I think this is out of my hands. I am positive, as others have commented, that UVA did not send the email and is not at fault to my knowledge. I think I will request to have this thread deleted by a mod and let the proper authorities sort this out. Thank you everyone for their help!

@“Dean J” Granted, I guess I should revise my original statement. I submitted an essay early that nobody had seen. Afterwards, one (and only one) person (the family friend) helped me edit it to what was essentially a completely different essay. Said person edited it on a Google Doc and that is the only point of interference or opening for fishy stuff that I can image. Otherwise, the only other point where things could have gone wrong is with Common App (not likely?) or UVA (even less likely).
It’s bizarre that they chose UVA to hide under, though. To begin with, how would they know I was applying there?
