Please help..approved tag to ucd for fall 2012..but will it get voided?

Hello everyone,

I am a second year student at Junior College. In November, I received an approved TAG decision for the Environmental Toxicology major at UC Davis (nonselective major). I was thrilled that my tag was approved, but unfortunately, I received my fall 2011 grades yesterday, and I discovered that I received a D in Organic Chemistry. On assist, the course is listed, but it isn't required to take at a CC, just recommended. I am confused because Davis sent emails to everyone saying to immediately report to undergraduate admissions ""D" or "F" grades received in required transferable courses taken during 2011-12. Will my tag get voided because I didn't receive a C on one of my IP courses? Should I file for academic renewal at the end of spring 2012? if my tag is voided, can I still get in through regular admissions? I already have more than 60 transferable units. Can I take OChem at UC Davis as a junior? Or will I have to stay at a CC for another year? I have completed IGETC and have completed every course on assist except the ochem series.

Thank you

Well, it is UC-transferable class so it will bring your GPA down. How much lower is your GPA?!

my gpa went to 3.16. but i can get it to 3.2 after the end of spring 2012

The D voids your TAG. You can still get in through general admissions, but I will leave it up to the folks on CC to comment on your “chances” as I’m not great at that sort of thing.

I know a couple of former CC students who applied to a biological science major at UCD who either dropped organic chemistry or did not pass and are taking the series there now.

Do you guys think I should file for Academic renewal?

What are you filing academic renewal for? Courses you took in the past, correct? Are you doing that to boost your GPA to help with regular admissions? How long does the process take? I guess if you decide to do that it’s something to mention in your January update. I don’t see how it could hurt.

Raider, what college do you go to?! Most schools allow you to be eligible for AR after certain amount of time has passed (1-year or maybe even more).

@elephalle: Im filing AR for the D i received in ochem. I am doing it because it’ll boost my gpa almost 20 points. The process begins immediately after I received hte substandard grade. I have to complete 20 units though.
@lawlking: I go to DVC. The policy makes it so I can file for AR after I have completed 20 units since I received the last substandard grade. So I’d have to take 20 units in spring 2012

Doesn’t that mean you won’t be able to petition until after completing those courses? UCD will not see a change in GPA until after spring, after decisions are out.

It’s something you can definitely include in your January update, it couldn’t hurt, but I don’t see how it would help in your case. It might make a case for an appeal though.

@elephapple: Yes, you are correct. But on my transfer academic update, I can at least notify undergraduate admissions of my intentions.

wouldnt it help because my gpa increases ALOT

UCD will not see that change in GPA at the time that the admissions evaluators make the decisions. Also, is your petition guaranteed? I think most schools stipulate that you not only take a certain number of units following the semester you’re applying for academic renewal, but you must also pass those subsequent courses.

I don’t know what your course load looked like this semester or if you had other extenuating circumstances you may have left out, but a D does not bode well and sets an unfortunate precedent.

You can’t do academic renewal on your D because it hasn’t been a 1-2 years since you got the grade–which most colleges requires in order to petition for it.

@elephapple: Even if they do not see it, i can still tell them. And yes it is guaranteed, granted you meet all requirements. ALl i’d have to do is pass all the classes with Cs. I took 19 units this semester, and I took bio along with Ochem, plus another 3 courses. I got As in all courses except ochem. My problem was that I was reading the textbook too much, and not doing as many problems as I should have been doing. I will explain this in my transfer academic update. it sucks because 2 years ago, when i applied to davis out of high school, i was waitlisted, then eventually rejected. I hope i can get into schools like sjsu and csueb to. but davis was and still is my #1

@Johnny. Raider said that his/her school doesn’t enable AR through the time period, rather they do it after 20 units have passed after the bad grade.

You can definitely include that in your transfer update. I was simply stating that there’s no guarantee you are going to pass all your courses so there is still a chance your petition may not be granted. Just because you put down that you’re applying for academic renewal doesn’t mean that it will happen and UCD will recognize that. I think it’s more than likely that UCD will consider your current GPA with the D when viewing your application.

Not doing enough practice problems is not an “extenuating circumstance” to explain the D in o-chem.

Anyway, GPA is not the only factor that’s being looked at. Your personal statement and/or extracurricular activities can make a case for you.

The D doesn’t eliminate you from the running, it just made it a bit harder to win. Good luck.

@elephapple: every class at my cc that isnt a science, I have gotten an A in. I am sure there arent many classes at a JC that are harder than Ochem. I am certain that I will pass all the classes in spring 2012.
The D isnt a reflection of all the work i put in. The class wasnt required, and unfortunately, i made the mistake of taking it.

I’m in the exact same boat as you are. I got a D in my econ class and my gpa dropped to a 3.11, and lost my TAG to Davis. I doubt anyone has heard about my major at UCD but its environmental planning analysis and planning. I hope the fact that my major isn’t impacted at all will help me still transfer in next fall. All I hope is for a miracle right now. Good luck to you man, you’re not the only one in a tough situation believe me.

@quietdude: I feel for you man, it sucks for the both of us. My major, as well as yours, is not impacted so hopefully we are still good. I am going next week to the Davisadmissions office, so hopefully I figure out some stuff. Are you going to retake the couse, or just explain in your transfer academic update what happened? Good luck to you as well

I’m going to try my best to get the class for the spring and retake it, but its going to be really hard to get it since classes are all full. So, right now I’m not sure what to put on my academic update.
