PLEASE help, Berkeley Chances...

Im totally panicking right now. I keep reading about all you people with phenomenal ECS and scores and I feel so lame. I just want to go to Berkeley... Do i even have a chance?? I only have one semester of college grades to show.

High school:
ECs= not alot of them. No sports. I have been working since the day I turned 15, usually at least 20 hours a week.
Awards= Honor Scholar, Bank of America Social Sciences Award, National Merit Semifinalist
AP Scores:
European History=3
US History=5
Biology=4
US Government=4
English Literature=4
Calculus BC=5

College:
GPA= 3.7 (I got straight A's last semester and I should again this semester. The B's are from 2 classes I took while a junior in high school.)
ECs= I dont have any. I work. This is definitely my super-weak spot.

Do I have a chance as an American Studies major..? PLEASE help me, im completely panicking..

you don't need EC to get into UCs. Don't worry.

you have a very good chance if you are CCC student...although I dont' understand what the hell you mean by this:

3.7 (I got straight A's last semester and I should again this semester. The B's are from 2 classes I took while a junior in high school.)

Heres the situation. This is my first year of ccc. I got straight A's last semester and probably will this semester, so my GPA would normally be 4.0. However, when I was a junior in high school I took 2 classes at the ccc as a concurrently enrolled student and I got a B in both of those. So those 2 classes from awhile ago are bringing down my GPA. Thats what it means. And thanks for helping.

First, working while gettting an education isn't easy, and I'm pretty sure most schools recognize that. Second, shouldn't they be able to see that the B's are from hs?
I think you have less to worry about that you think . . . Good luck.

you have only one semester of college grades to show? Don't UC's require atleast 60 units to transfer as a junior?

Well, yes. But I took so many APs that they count as almost a whole year of class at a community college. In the end I will have taken 34 units at ccc and the rest are APs.

Easymack: ECs will always help, of course. But if you write on your personal statement that you're working 40 hours a week because you need to, and still get top grades... you know, just as long as you justify that you don't have time for ECs, you're fine. That's why the personal statement/essay is so important to UCs - they recognize that every student has different things going on, so they're expecting you to explain it in your essay.

easymack, I have a bunch of AP units as well. Are you under the quarter system? If so, will you be updating any UCs about your Winter quarter grades?

No, Im on the semester system. Im thinking that if I dont get into Cal I might appeal and give them my mid semester Spring grades or something.

You were able to finish IGETC/General Ed and major requirements with just APs and a year of CC? Are you in any kind of Honors Transfer Program?

Yeah, I finish the IGETC this semester and my major doesnt really have alot of prep. Its American Studies and all of the classes Berkeley wants me to take arent offered at my ccc. Im not in any honors transfer program... another cause for concern.
