ALL....I AM DESPERATE AND NEED YOUR HELP TO GUID ME ON WHAT I SHOULD DO?

Write/visit/have HS counselor call them, have my teachers call them....PLS HELP

UMich has deferred me. It is my 1st choice. Here is my status

Admitted in Ohio State Honors Program with scholarship
My stats:

SAT = 2050

Excellent teacher recommendations
I am OOS
Slight improvement in mid-term grades and class rank

Holy Jesus Christ and the Holy Lord Almighty...

I know people much lower than you that got in.

I suggest that you send extra letters of recommendation, send a letter talking about your intent and send an essay with it, have a counselor send a letter, and make sure you emphasize your improvement.

This is insane. I wouldn't feel so "desperate" though. You are a smart kid, and you deserve a good school, so don't feel so down.

I was deferred with a 3.65 + 32. My friend was deferred with a 3.7 + 31. Another was deferred with a 3.7 + 33.

None of us had poor ECs (I'm willing to say I had great ones too), we are all in-state and we all took lots of APs. And I had legacy too. **** happens... :/
Me and my first friend (with 31 ACT) both applied late sept, deferred mid-oct. The third person applied late oct, deferred mid/late jan...UMich's selectivity is often underrated, it's not as easy to get into as people seem to think

I've already been accepted after being deferred (applied late sept, deferred mid-nov, accepted mid-dec). Don't give up hope. I suggest sending extra teacher recs, any new EC/awards, and anything that increases your app strength...

People always seem to "know students" who got in with "worse stats". What do you expect? Michigan has close to 30,000 applicants and freshman classes with 5,500-6,000 students. I know people with worse stats that got into Stanford or Yale. I am talking sub 3.7 students with sub 1300 SAT scores and no special ECs. And Michigan is 4-5 times larger than those two schools. The question we should be asking, what is the acceptance rate for applicants with sub 3.7 and sub 30/2000? At Michigan is is probably not as high as one would imagine. It really is too bad Michigan does not release those numbers, but I doubt Michigan accepts more than 50% of such applicants. In the case of the OP, what really stands out is his class rank. Top 55% is just another way of saying bottom 45%. If over 50% of his classmates have 3.7+ GPAs, I would have to question the grading intensity at his school. I hope he means top 5% of his class, in which case, his chances of getting admitted after being deferred are decent. But if his class rank truly is "top 55%", then I would say he probably faces an uphill battle.

If the OP is indeed top 5% (which I think is right), then I'd say he stands a 50/50 chance. His GPA is lower than the mean and his SAT is roughly equal to the mean.

I do have to wonder the difference between freshmen and transfer applicants. It seems like a LOT of freshmen applicants are getting deferred (at least so far on this site) and most of them are either decent to above average on UMich's scale.

And then I wonder how competitive transfer applicants are compared to freshmen, and how much of a difference it really makes

As a tranfer applicant for fall 2007 I will admit that my stats are FAR below what these deffered freshman have posted but then I did state in another post that I am not sure how many students UMich is REQUIRED to take in-state. Applying OOS as a freshman is usually much more challenging than applying OOS transfer because these public schools arent required to take a certain number of in-state transfers. All transfers are the same. Freshman applicants are in a much more competitive game.

HIYOUALL, there is very little I can do to guide you. You are a solid applicant, like most students who apply to Michigan. Your SAT and GPA are within the mid 50% range. That pretty much means you have a 50% (give or take a few) chance of getting in, depending on the size of the applicant pool.
