I'm down to Delaware and Penn State. I would major in Math/Economics at Delaware and Math(Actuarial Science) at Penn State.

Things that are important - Not a party person but like to have fun, tuition costs, school reputation overall, getting a job in 4 years, campus, being close to home(live in nyc).

Would you give me your opinion where and why? (i want your biased opinion)

My son is a freshman at UD and his final choice last year was also between UD and Penn State. Some of the things you questioned were also his considerations. First of all, for an OOS student (we’re from NY too), the tuition is at least $5000.00 less at UD (and that’s without any merit aid, which I don’t know if you got). Also, UD is a very easy commute home to NY compared to Penn St. There are trains directly from Newark to NYC, and the car ride is only 2 1/2 hr vs. about 4 hr to PSU. The party scene is probably pretty much the same at both schools, but UD being close to Philly and Baltimore offer potentially other social activities you might not be able to take advantage of at PSU such as concerts or professional sporting events. UD has the small town attached to the University, though not as big as PSU -college park, but at least you have a similar feel of being able to go out locally for a bite to eat etc. or other conveniences. Another consideration is the size of the student body. Penn State has twice the number of undergrads as UD >30,000 vs. about 16,000. Though the kids who go there don’t seem to compalin about feeling lost in the large student body (at PSU) my son had a preference for the smaller size (though not too small by any means). Based on some of these comparisons my son chose UDel and couldn’t be happier with his choice. Good luck in your decision. Since both schools are similar in their academic rankings, you can’t go wrong either way.

Right now he’s leaning towards Engineering, but is not officially in the Engineering School. He took intro to engineering first semester, and a Civil Engineering 2nd semester. He also took two sciences and Calculus which would fill engineering requirements. He also took two business courses, which he may want to minor in. As i mentioned, If you go in undecided, they will help plan your schedule, and you don’t need to declare a major until end (or Spring, not sure) of Sophmore year. Good luck in your decision. Any other questions, I would be happy to give my input.
