Okay so I'm a upcoming junior and I need help selecting my classes. So far I have AP US History, AP English, And AP Chemistry. Here's the thing I wanted to to take anatomy and physiology as well. I'm supposed to take honors(pre-ap algebra 2) but it is only available during first and last hour, except ap chemistry is last hour and anatomy is first hour. I am definitely taking ap chem. So I'm not sure if I should stay with anatomy and just take regular algebra 2, or take algebra 2 and some other class. I really want anatomy as well because I am applying for a biomedical internship at my state university and I feel like that would really help my application. I'm only worried because I go to a public Arizona high school and as you know we don't have the greatest reputation for education. I want to go to barnard, ucsd, and or other good academic schools ( not ivy though) what should I do please help!! Will it hurt me when I take my SAT's and ACT's if I just take regular algebra 2? Basically paid medical internship and regular algebra 2 or honors algebra 2 and other classes. I want to eventually go into medicine. Thanks!!

A medical internship will add much more to your college application (and med school application!) than a slightly higher level of algebra 2. If the anatomy class would get you the internship, do that.

It won’t affect your med school application, unless you continue the internship into college (med schools only look at ECs completed during college). But, it will give you valuable insight into the field, and help you decide if this is something you’re determined to work towards. I think you should go for it, as the extra income and experience will likely benefit you much more than being able to take calculus in high school. Plus, you can always look into covering the extra material on your own time, and get into calc anyways. :)

My recommendation is that you put aside the temptation to specialize in high school. Math is essential for your major. If you were asking about taking courses beyond Calculus then the advice you’ve received from other posters is excellent. But you’re talking about algebra 2.

Take the highest level of math courses you can in Junior year. Honors versus standard makes a big difference in most school settings. Avoid taking a class where some of the students have major issues with basic math. Honors math will help you on your SAT/ACT, Sat Math 2, and on any science course you take in junior and senior year.

Sorry I think I made it confusing, I will still be taking algebra 2 if I take anatomy. It just won’t be honors that’s all

Thanks for your replies! I think I will take AP Chem, AP environmental science instead, that way I will take honors math. I’ll still have a chance at the internship :)
