Right now I'm pretty much bombing AP Calc. I've had good grades in the past, and I've always gotten A+'s in math. But I think senioritis has gotten to me, and right now I'm getting a C in AP Calc.

I'm applying to several highly selective universities (a couple from the Top 20, Yale SCEA) and I'm wondering how badly this will affect my chances of admission. I've always been a humanities person, and my ECs reflect that, but since math is so important I'm afraid this will be a major dent on my application.

I have two options. 1) Stick with AP Calc and hopefully pull it to a B by the time the mid-year report is sent out. 2) Drop AP Calc and move into Calculus Regular (Canadian Calculus) and get 90's. My C will be dropped from my transcript, but it'll show up that I'm taking Calc Regular, a course that US Universities don't really recognize.

I really don't know what to do, and if I decide to drop it I have to decide by Monday. Thanks so much in advance!

US universities do recognize regular calculus courses taken in the US. It may not get you the extra "bump" from an AP class, but it is still considered a real math course. Unless the Canadian class is very different, it should be recognized as calculus as well.

In terms of difficulty, Calculus 12 isn't so different from AP Calculus, unless your AP teacher tests you on proofs like mine. It might put a dent, but in all likelihood they shouldn't auto-reject you on the basis of that one grade alone.

Yeah, I'm in the same position. I'm working my butt off to bump it up to a B though. I talked to my Calculus teacher about it and he said that I shouldn't worry. I should just be extra careful when I take his quizzes and tests because he knows I get the material and whatnot. He also ended the conversation by saying that he has utmost faith that I can get a 5 on the exam come May. I hope he's right!

I don't think you understand how transcripts work, it shows everything that is current. If you switch, don't you think that is a BIG RED FLAG? Go and get your formal transcript from your school, they might not report grades until they are finals.

BTW, what I meant is that I believe you are too late to do drop/add and thus, it will show mid-term grades and than Calc. The person you should talk to is your gc

Well thing is, I can still change it before my transcript goes out the first week of december. I'll have to take a Calc 12 exam which will determine my mark for Calc 12.

And samuelc, maybe our AP calc teacher is just ridiculous, cause her tests are so insanely hard.

Ill probs talk to my guidance counselor tomorrow and see what she says. Ackk I hate calc =(

Everyone is bombing AP Calc it seems like, self included. Stick with it and get your B, I don't think a C will kill you in the grand scheme of things, especially if math isn't your thing!

It certainly isn't mine. The Calc I'm taking now will supposedly be harder than any college math I will be taking for my major. I can't wait to take business math and stats...
