Hi everybody. I was an EA Applicant to Georgetown and ND and I was very fortunate to be accepted to both, truly a dream come true. However, although I have a few months to decide and a couple of campus visits to make, as of right now I cannot honestly decide between the two. Can anyone tell me the differences in ND and Georgetown besides from the obvious i.e. "one is in DC and one is in South Bend." What I'm looking for really is in terms of academics, (educational quality, interaction with professors, academic advising) social life, (Does ND kind of die down after football season...Is Georgetown really a bar school?) "feel," (Sense of community at both campuses) student body, (compare Gtown's with ND's) and any other comparisons/observations/insights you can make about both schools. All responses would be truly truly appreciated. Thanks!

go to nd ....

yeah if i was at either I could add to the discussion. Notre Dame is going to be more conservative overall...and my vote, regardless, goes for Georgetown.

There is a big difference. Both are going to give you a very good reputation, though Notre Dame is ranked a bit higher. Georgetown is in DC, which may be a draw, but it depends on the person. Georgetown really isn't Catholic anymore whereas ND is still very Catholic, so a lot will come down to that. I think that it is safe to say that ND's alumni network is stronger but Georgetown may have stronger grad schools. For undergrad, I think ND is better...however, I am a ND student so I am biased.

I hope that helps, let me know if you have any specific questions which may help you! I am more than willing to help.

Now for the specifics you asked for that I missed the first time...sorry, I go too fast.

What I'm looking for really is in terms of academics, (educational quality, interaction with professors, academic advising)
Both are very strong academic schools, obviously. Again, ND is ranked a bit higher but I think they are probably comperable in all those areas. Both are going to have the cream of the crop in terms of professors. ND students are known for working together and helping each other, don't know about GU.

social life, (Does ND kind of die down after football season...Is Georgetown really a bar school?)
I can't speak for Georgetown but for ND, not really in my opinion. We still have basketball and lots of other sports and really the social life at ND isn't all about sports. There are things to do throughout the year. Remember, Georgetown doesn't have football so this may be a bigger negative for GU than ND.

"feel," (Sense of community at both campuses)
This is where ND really stands out. ND sells a family atmosphere and it delivers. People look out after another, not just while you are at ND, but for the rest of your life. The ND family is a very real thing. I will explain this more if you are interested but I honestly don't think ANY school can compete with us here.

student body, (compare Gtown's with ND's)
ND more conservative, probably more religious and "midwestern" but both are highly intelligent.

and any other comparisons/observations/insights you can make about both schools.
ND is going to be more focused on sports, Georgetown may be more of an Ivy feel. Personally, I wouldn't trade the sports for anything. The academics are great either way but I need more than just that, and that is why I would choose ND over any Ivy League, but that is just me (GU isn't Ivy though, but you know). I just think it is a good mix of sports and athletics.

Take my opinions on GU with a grain of salt, it was not a school I considered so I don't know it as well as some. Good luck!

i am in the same situation as you AJ, but right now i am leaning a bit more towards notre dame...don't forget that georgetown does have big basketball even though football isn't a big deal there.

depends also on wut you want to pursue in your studies.

GU hands down is the better school in terms of pursuing a politics/government/ and international relations track. I am in the same place =] haha

ND is business for me while GU is school of foreign service... I'd have to say you need to take into consideration what your actually looking for out of your college experience?

I'm from the midwest so I particularly am leaning more towards Georgetown because I do want that international and urban feel to my school. DC offers a lot of opportunities that aren't present in South Bend. But as others mentioned GU doesn't have as big an endowment as ND nor does it have as strong of an alumni network. So =] figure out what you want first adn then go from there! good luck

Something that I forgot to mention but it is VERY important is that ND does have a DC campus where you can spend a year. If you are interested in government or international relations, that may be a program you want to take advantage of. That's right boys and girls, you have the best of both worlds :).

Yea I am in the same situation. Is there a lot to do around Notre Dame? I have heard it is like a bubble and you pretty much stay on campus most of the time...

I for the most part stay on campus, but there is a lot to do on campus! There are prestigious speakers all the time (if that is your thing, I personally like it). Also, there are movies on campus for a reduced rate on the weekends, plenty of parties, and dances every weekend somewhere or another. There is a lot to do on campus! South Bend the town isn't the greatest, but it also is only an hour and a half from Chicago.

"ND does have a DC campus "
Irish where is that and what do they offer there?

This is all I have on it so far but it should tell you quite a bit about it. Feel free to email them too if you want more info. I have one person I know who went there but I am not on the best terms with the person (long story, goes back to high school) so I can't give a direct hookup on this one unfortunately.

Son chose Notre Dame for the engineering, and the huge network of alumni all over the world! (job opportunities). Those are just two of the important issues to him, there are a host of other reasons as well. G'town does not seem to have the broad academics--his major is engineering, but we feel ND offers a cushion of other academic disciplines if he decides to change majors, great business school, pre-med, etc.

yeah im debating between georgetown and notre dame too and i swear that every day i have a different preference! i haven't visited ND yet but one of my friends goes there and offered to let me do an overnight in her dorm (she chose ND over georgetown last year).

If you haven't visited ND yet, then it is a must. Nothing will sell you more on ND than visiting!

RunRinCT I feel the same way with how I go back and forth almost every hour (sadly) between the two schools....There are many great things about both...Ultimately, I suppose I'm going to have to visit both again and decide for myself...Thanks everyone for all your responses and advice

I visited ND before gtown. I remember being at ND and saying to myself "This is where I want to go to school" and then I remember visiting gtown afterwards and saying "There's no way I can pass this up if I get in"....AHHH A tough decision to make but certainly a nice one to have

If you're considering a major in one of the scientific fields, it should be noted that we have recently built a new science hall. Cost us 70 million smackeroos it did. It's the most advanced set of university lab facilities in the nation right now. Accompanying it, we have a huge push for undergraduate research that's going on right now. As a matter of fact, I (a frosh) am beginning research with my physics professor next semester in high energy nuclear science. And never forget, we are ND!

Let me throw in a plug for ND undergrad research as well. I am doing a honors thesis and was awarded over $1,000 from the university to complete the project through a special program made to increase undergraduate research at ND.

Putsch, can you comment on your research opportunity. How did you land the opportunity already? How did you find out about it? And can you share exactly what you will be doing in terms of research? This is an area (research opps) that I think a lot of people are interested in (prospective students, especially). Please be as specific as possible!
