Hey, guys, I'm an international prospective student this year. I have a tough question now. I've just been admitted by my dream school and received a financial aid package. I asked for need-based financial aid 40,000/y or so and the school ends up giving me about 27,000/y. I'm very grateful that my dream school has admitted me but I'm afraid my family still can't afford this large amount of dollars. And it is too hard to find private sponsors or organizations to help me financially in my country. Can I write to the school to ask for more? How should I write to the school? Has anyone succeeded before asking for more aid? Any suggestions?

How could you ask for $40,000/year? You don’t ask for anything!

You give the colleges the financial info they require & then they will prepare a FA package. It is up to the colleges to determine whether they will meet your need or not.

Financial aid for international students is very tough!

If this school doesn’t guarantee to meet 100% of need for internationals, then you are probably not going to get any more aid, unfortunately.

Though it is a disappointment, but thank you for your answer, RiversChoice.

You can ask for a FA review, but you are only likely to get more FA in one of these situations:

You have outstanding medical expenses or some other financial emergency that wasn’t previously reported.

You have a better FA package offered to you by a peer or higher school.

The school looked at your family’s income and assets and determined that it can pay about $30k per year. So, your family must have a good income and/or assets. The fact that your family can’t/won’t pay that much is THEIR decision.

I don’t know what school this is, but many do not include the cost of international travel in their COAs, so that will be another cost that your family much take into account. That can easily be another $1k -3k per year.

Thanks for your information, entomom.I’ll see what I can do.
