Please Help I have a Problem!

Okay. So this summer I want to take a biology class at my local community college. I looked into it and its around 300$. I'm taking AP bio next year and the only reason i'm taking this class during the summer is because I really like biology. My question is im not that rich so is it worth taking this class if I might relearn the same material in my AP bio class next year? Also, will taking one college class even matter for colleges? Keep in mind this is a local college which sucks. Thank you for your help. Should I take the class or not?

Don’t take it. It will be [almost] totally covered by AP Bio.

Okay but I want to take a bio class during the summer, like genetics or molecular bio or evolution or somthing. Is it worth it? Hopefully if I took a specialized course like the ones I said they wont be covered by AP bio. Right?

Why not work a job, perhaps as a tutor for biology? That would raise some cash for the class and show initiative.

If you’re looking for credit for your transcript, then you have to take a formal course, speaking ahead of time with your high school. Our local community college charges $115 a credit hour, so $345 for 3 credits: no free lunch. Remember, if you take a college level course be prepared to do college level work, a step up typically from high school, different grading scales often without curves, and by all means, know the rules of engagement (a few horror stories about high schoolers taking CC courses and using on campus computer and cheating allegations). Know the professor’s and TA’s rules and keep to them. I think eyes front and centered if it were me. Also, no late turn in on assignments as you just get 0’s. And don’t’ be sick for tests or plan to take it at 7 a.m. the next morning. I kid you not, that’s what my teen had to do. But, you should get credit and most important, likable knowledge. Good for you.

If you’re looking to learn to keep your mind active etc, look into free online science courses offered by MIT and Stanford.

Lastly, look into waived fees for registration, text book discounts if your truly hurting for income, and maybe if you’re lucky and look hard you might find some scholarship. Good luck.

MIT and Stanford offer free online bio courses? Sweet! Where do i go for that?

Well the Purist in me would say to look for it your self (self advocacy skills). But I think sharing knowledge is a great virture (I always give a word of the day to my teens via cell phone and an on subject pearl of the day to my colleagues) so here you go:

^ HAHAHA that was hilarious. I’m guessing your kids must be alright (with your philosophy). I like that point of view.

I want to take a class at college to higher my high school gpa because it might be weighted. Is it worth 300 bucks to take a bio class? Will it look good for colleges?

Can someone answer my question pleasee!

Bump

10char

I would still take a course, it will prepare you even better for AP Bio, and you seem passionate about it, so thats always good.

^Okay, thank you so much, I’m going to take it I just needed that assurance that I wasn’t making a mistake. Should this go on my college app, or should I leave it out? Will it make a difference?

Can someone answer my question and also show me how to quote someone? Very much appreciated!

If you wanted to (provided that you got a good grade) you should, it won’t be looked down upon.

And I know you were trying to quote on my Duke thread, so I think this is how you do it.

Remove space after the 1st bracket and get

^remove that space after both opening brackets

Colleges care less about weighted GPA than unweighted or even just a holistic view of your transcript. What they really do is look at the classes you took, and then the grades you got. Because some schools weight outrageously and some don’t at all.

I think, given everything you’ve said, you shouldn’t take the class. It would be a waste of money that you have said isn’t exactly growing on trees right now, plus you’ll be relearning most, if not all, of it next year.

Try a free online bio course (like someone suggested) and/or bio tutoring (again, like someone suggested). Or maybe try to work in a biology lab this summer, though it mayyy be a tad late to find a spot.

yep but remove the space inbetween [ /quote] as well

I appreciate your comment. However, would I be relearning it in AP bio if i took a specialized course such as genetics. I think that if I took genetics or something like that, I wouldn’t relearn it because AP bio is a superficial class that doesn’t go deep into all parts of Biology. So that would give me the added depth that I desire. Am I right or wrong?
