PLEASE HELP! I need help with OSU decision

Hello everyone, I need some major help with college decisions here as I have many options.

First of all, after being deferred I’ve been offered wait list for OSU Columbus campus and I did choose to have my name put on the wait list. But, I do have some other options available to me if I don’t get accepted for autumn quarter 2011 in Columbus [my dad reccomends that I do this because since I will be leaving for Air Force basic traning sometime next year, it would help me to get ahead on classes since I would end up taking a quarter/semester off anyway for basic traning etc]. My first option is, if I don’t get in for autumn quarter (OSU has until June 1, 2011 to let me know) I have the option to start taking classes for summer quarter in Columbus (starts June 20, 2011) and then transistion into autumn quarter in Columbus as well after that. My second option would be to attend a regional campus, preferably Ohio State Newark <www.newark.osu.edu>, for a year and then transfer to Columbus for the rest of my OSU years. My third option is to say screw it all and attend Kent State University, which is my second choice. </www.newark.osu.edu>

Kent is offering me $3,500 a year in scholarships whereas OSU is offering me $0 at this point since I won’t know of an admissions decision until June. So, the money from Kent is a rather good incentive and it’s a lot cheaper than OSU, plus I DO like Kent’s campus, but with being a first-generation college student, I want a big college experience as well and I feel OSU would be a great fit for that. I live out in the country and have all my life and would also like to experiecne a big city like Columbus too as well as a lively college town. Kent State doesn’t have a “lively” college town right next to it, you have to travel a few miles away from campus to get to downtown Kent. So, I really don’t know what to do. I mean, the jig isn’t up yet as I don’t know whether or not I’m admitted for autumn quarter 2011 at OSU until June 1, 2011. These are all just back-up plans and it makes for a very tough decision as they all seem to be good options. I’ve always wanted to go to OSU since I was little and this is quite the damper on my plans and my dad feels as if I would regret not going to OSU if I didn’t go. SO, I just wanted to get some other people’s opinions. Any suggestions would be great! THANKS SO MUCH!

It sounds like you would much rather be at Ohio State. Didn’t you post in another thread and say that a lot of the wait-listers get off of the wait list? I would wait and hope for that. Then if that plan failed, I would probably start summer quarter in your position. Because 1. It sounds like you like OSU more than Kent State. 2. If you’re going to go to basic, starting in the summer will give you more credits so you’ll be further along when you have to go (though why aren’t you going to basic this summer?). 3. Even if you didn’t have to go to basic, starting in the summer would still put you ahead, and you could make friends and such before fall quarter. I wouldn’t worry too much about not having a lot of a summer - it’s not like you’ll be in class/doing work all the time, you’ll still be able to have fun. Heck, I know kids who take summer classes just because they get too bored during the summer. Good luck with your choice and with the Air Force!

Sounds like you really want to go to OSU, I think you would regret not going, since you do have the opportunity to go.

Starting summer quarter isn’t the worst thing, it actually helps you because it’s becoming increasingly difficult to graduate in 4 years, and one summer will net you about 15 credits which can make all the difference in your schedule. Not to mention the fact that you’ll be able to get used to OSU’s campus before the Fall so you’ll be one of the few freshmen who aren’t consulting their maps every 5 minutes.
