Please help me!! 3rd year Berkeley student wants to transfer away.

Hi everyone, I hope I can get some help from you guys. And I would really appreciate that!!

I just got in UCBerkeley as a junior transfer from a community college at summer 09. This spring is my second semester at Berkeley. However, the more I stay at Berkeley, the more I feel that this school if not for me... Big campus, tons of people, huge classes, aggressive people in my major, hard to find connection, loneliness.. I've been thinking for a long time why I'm not happy here and I figured that I'd better enjoy a private school.

I got into vanderbilt too last summer when I applied transfer but chose Berkeley. So at this point, is it possible to transfer away Berkeley in my junior year and apply to a private school? Do I have more or less chance of getting into Vanderbilt or does Vandy ever consider 3rd year students for transfer? (I applied some other private schools too but all got rejected. So I guess Vandy is my only hope here now..)

On the other hand, I wouldn't know whether I would like a new school even if I get in. So tell me, basically speaking, would private schools offer better experence to undergrads? Is there any disadvantage of private schools?

Please, please,,you guys help me!! I need to make a decision soon. And I hope I can make a right one.

Thanks a lot!

Pick up the telephone.

Call the admissions office at Vandy.

Ask if it is possible to re-activate your application from last year.

Be prepared to spend two full years there to complete your degree.

Good luck!

Congratulations for getting into Berkeley in the first place. It’s true that it may take you longer to graduate if you transfer, but if you can afford the private school and potentially an extra semester, you would certainly open yourself up to new experiences with such a huge change. Lots of kids turn down Berkeley for private schools. Many will tell you go smaller for undergraduate and save the huge university for graduate school. Only you know what will inspire you. Big cultural difference between Vanderbilt and Berkeley!
