Please help me advise a rising junior

I have offered to assist the daughter of someone close to our family about college admissions. I know that I can get some great help here.

She is a good student, ranked 12 out of 400, taking the hardest courses possible. She took the PSAT as a soph., but couldn't remember her scores. She will have about 7 AP classes by the time she graduates. She attends a public high school in Louisiana

She would like to major in English, with a minor in music (not definite). She plays the flute. Merit money would be important. She doesn't want any large state school. Oh, and she doesn't want to go too far north (too cold). She would also not want to be so far away as to not be able to come home for the school breaks. She has no interest in trying for the Ivies or big name schools. She doesn't care about location - Rural or urban.

A school that has come to mind is Rhodes. Can you think of any other school with a good English department, a good music department, with financial aid in mind. Please help me find some schools that might fill her needs. Thank you so much

unc chapel hill sounds good. they give good financial aid, or so i hear. my flute teacher got her masters there as well :) the weather is nice, it's not too urban or too rural, and it's in the south, not terribly far from Louisiana. out of state admissions is a bit tough, but it might be good for her, if she's looking into Rhodes.

washington university in st. louis also comes to mind. my flute teacher wanted badly to do her masters there :) both of the schools I named are somewhat competitive.

Rhodes is a great choice. Agnes Scott would probably shower her with merit money, and is a great school in a great location. Rice would be fine; a little more difficult to get in, and I'm not sure that, if music is not the first passion, a particularly good choice (the Shepard School of Music is really high-powered!) I've heard good things about Hendrix, though I don't know about music.

What about Vanderbilt?

Denison University.

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=159719%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=159719</a></p>

how cold does it get at oberlin?

Baylor has given several highly qualified students very good aid and depending on La location would meet location hurdle.

Southwestern University near Austin, Texas would also be worth a look.

Thanks for all of the imput so far. Monday starts a complete kitchen remodel, so I will be housebound for a few weeks. (Hopefully, not more.)
I plan to do lots of searching while I have to stay out of the way, but close.

Money is really the big issue, I think. I grew up in St. Louis, and know how wonderful Wash. U is , but I think her getting lots and lots of money isn't going to happen. I'll have to know her test scores before we can really see where she is at. She is a very good, nice girl who comes from a large family. Anyway, I would hope that I could come up with a good list of schools for her to look at that had the great English Department, and some music and was very generous with aid.

Friends had children go to Knox and Depauw. I know that the parents were pleased there. Just keep thinking of good English Departments, if possible. Thanks.
