Please help me before I waste time and money.

I am a currently a student at Walden University. Going for a Bachelor degree in I.T. with the concentration being on programming. I don’t have a Associate degree. Going straight for Bachelor’s. I’m on the fence between Accounting degree or staying with I.T. Not sure which major I should choose yet. These are the reasons that’s keeping me from going to a traditional university.

With a online university I can go straight to a Bachelor degree while traditional university or colleges want me to attain a Associate degree first.

I can stay home be with my wife and not come home tired from a long day of work and school. I have the drive for a traditional school but just easier for online.

It’s a long story but my wife needs to be comforted. She is depressed right now but as time goes by she will be better. Something big just happened that wasn’t planned. It was unexpected. That’s all I’m going to say.

Shorter amount of time to graduate with my degree.

These are the reasons that makes me want to go to a traditional school:

I’m afraid a degree from a online university will not be respected from a future employer and my resume will be thrown away.

Traditional schools are generally cheaper.

You have more potential to make new friends and also job opportunities may arise from meeting new people.

Traditional schools may or may not give me some hands on experience with my major. This will depend on the school.

I hope someone here can help me with this. I will appreciate it. Thank you.

Well, first of all, you can do a traditional school program online and for accounting there are a ton out there (A few for IT and MIS), just do the research. Schools like Northeastern, Penn State, U of Florida, ect…Just look around…Not having the AA will hurt you for getting into these schools, but Walden should have some associate degrees that you can attain before switching. Be aware though that when I switch from U of Phoenix I had to basically start over and all the credits I earned previously were considered electives. (I graduated from Northeastern)

As far as having troubles with future employers, the only companies that hate online degrees are the big company’s like Dell, Intel, IBM, and Proctor and Gamble. These days about 85% of employers view and online degree just as valuable as a campus based degree. Be warned though that an IT or accounting degree without experience is useless. Best of luck to you…
