Please Help Me Choose!!!

Hey,

I am currently deciding between Carnegie Mellon University's business school Tepper, or the University of Miami's business school. I live in Miami so it would be close by. Miami is also offering me a full ride + about $10,000 pocket money. However, I've heard Tepper is really prestigious and is worth the extra money. I was offered about $37000 in grants from CMU and a $2500 work study and $3000 loan. So a little over $42000 was the total financial aid offered. The Cost of Attendance is about $49000. Is CMU worth the extra 6 or 7 grand a year in loans, or should I just stick with UM for undergrad since I will be making money on top of receiving full tuition?

One question you might want to ask is where the jobs will be once you graduate. Ask where placements were from both schools and think about where you want to end up. The SCS kids end up all over the place - though due to the nature of the business predominently on the east and west coasts. If you want to work in Miami, it may be U. of Miami is better. Or it may be that Tepper is so good it doesn't matter. (I don't know.) My own inclination is that your undergrad years are an ideal time to spread your wings and explore a different part of the country. So if it were me I'd go to CMU, but you may have different priorities.

as a Tepper grad loan totals of $24-28,000 for 4 years is quite reasonable. Try going on career centers (salary surveys) at both schools and compare employers and salary offers.

Might want to look at the longterm. I'd say that is a very nice financial aid package, not that many people get so much money in grants. I think Tepper will offer you better job opportunities in the long-term, and give you a chance to interact with people from all over the place, so it's a good broadening experience for doing Business.

Although since you're from Miami, you might really hate the weather here :/. lol i don't know if that's a real concern for you.

I'd say Tepper for obvious reasons. You'll make back the money in no time and be in a really good position to go to a great MBA school, get promoted, be on Wall Street, be in a great firm, etc.

I am really uncertain about where I want to go. My family wants me to stay here, and my counselors think that I am giving up a wonderful opportunity if I reject CMU's offer. And, I don't even know what I want anymore. CMU is working, however, to give me a more competitive financial aid package since I mentioned UM's offer to them. They say 2morrow I will receive my revised financial aid package. Hopefully, this will make my decision a little bit easier.

I received an updated financial aid offer from CMU and now they offered me an additional $6000 in scholarship money per year, making my full financial aid package $48000 + yearly, which covers just about everything since the COA is about $49000. I guess this makes my decision a little bit harder now. :-/

Smartbrotha, With the revised financial aid, I'd suggest you choose Tepper.

All the best.

I am sorry but between CMU basically full ride and university of miami full ride, there is no comparison. CMU is like on the same level as ivy schools. I just want to know, do you know why you are getting so much aid from CMU. Is your EFC really low?

I think it's 0. I remember some of his previous posts (cuz, I kind of helped him there).

Mine is 0 too, So I guess I'll be pretty decent money.

Also Smartbrotha, is any of that from UMiami merit ?

In another words can I influence a College's Fin. Aid by showing the Merit Money I got from another Uni ?

Yes my EFC is 0. And, milki you can influence a college's financial aid by showing them merit money you got from another institution. For my UMiami financial aid, I received a full tuition scholarship (I applied and I was 1 of 20 selected per year), I received a bunch of florida grants/scholarships, and the pell grant, and another federal grant. I explained to CMU that I needed a more competitive financial aid package, and they instructed me to fill out an appeals form. On the form I only asked for a $6000 increase, and to my surprise, they gave me exactly what I asked for. Additionally, they had me to write a letter that explained some financial hardships that I wasn't able to mention on my initial financial aid application.

Thanks for the info Smartbrotha and good luck with college.

no problem. thanks

CMU matched what you got from university of Miami? That's odd, is UM a private school, i didn't think it was. I thought the only public schools they matched were gatech and umich?

I aked them how about UT Austin? They said "only competitive private schools"; I was there during one of the financial aid workshops. I guess ^^ got alot of grants and scholarship, that it was worthwhile for an appeal.

UMiami is a private university. And, yes I got a lot of grants and scholarships. I spoke with CMU on the phone and they were very nice about it. I let them know that UM is offering me a full ride + $10000 pocket money per year. I told them that I needed a more competitive aid package. And, I filled out teh paperwork and I asked for a $6000 increase and they gave me exactly what I asked for.

Hey guys...I have decided to go visit CMU this Thursday and Friday. This will hopefully give me a better idea so I can make my final decision. I should have my FINAL decision by Saturday after coming back.

I wrote a letter requesting that they matched my offer from Duquesne (a good- but non-competitive school) and they did

Wow... full ride to CMU. That's something to be jealous of.
I wouldn't pass it if I were you, [Smartbrotha07].

But hopefully everything will sort itself out after you visit.
