So happy I am accepted to UDel but now I'm confused! Trying to choose between UDel (accepted as university studies major, no merit $) or Penn State (got into Smeal business school, undecided, with $6000/year merit for 4 years). Both schools are OOS, and tuition is basically the same, except now PSU is even less with scholarship.. Really unsure about what I want to study...love fashion and UDel has fashion merchandising, PSU has marketing but not specifically fashion... Think both could prob prepare me for a career...UDel is 2 hours, PSU is 4 hours... Visited and loved both.

You have a happy choice to make. If it’s all things equal, take inot account the cost. Think of what you can do with that extra money. D should have a definite advantage worth that differential to pick it as your choice.

As stated above, all things being equal,

I would seriously check career placement opportunities at each prospective school. The alumni network at Penn State is much stronger.

In a stronger economy the difference may be negligible, however, currently, the differences maybe substantial.

Thanks cptofthehouse and samiamy… Really good advice.

I would also bear in mind the location of the two schools. PSU isn’t near anything else, while from UD it’s easy to get to places on the east coast. That was a major issue for my son (now a very happy UD junior), who prefers the ease of getting home (near Philly), going to visit his sister in NYC, etc. But of course YMMV.

Collegbound: First, congrats, both schools are tremendous, so what a happy choice to have to make! Penn State has a slightly better academic reputation overall and is a top choice among corporate recruiters, and there is a huge alumni network. However, it is roughly twice the size of UD and some students feel a little lost in /intimidated by that. I suspect it is easier to get individualized attention at UD. Another thing to be aware of regarding Smeal is that you have to apply for entry into the Marketing major, so be sure you are familiar with those restrictions/requirements before you commit if that’s the major you think you’ll want. UD’s weather is better. Penn State sports are better. Both get top name entertainment. As mentioned above, it’s easier to get to metropolitan areas from UD, Penn State is in the middle of nowhere. On campus housing is easier to get at UD. Penn State’s downtown is bigger. Both schools have tons of happy, proud students. Nittany Lion? Blue Hen? No bad choice there. Best of luck deciding. Go spend a day or two at both before deciding if possible.

Thank you to all of you who took the time to advise me! I did revisit both schools and spoke to faculty about both programs. I decided that Penn State was for me!!!

We are…

Penn State!

My D will be going to Penn State too. She absolutely can’t wait to start!

Best of luck.

As a Penn State grad whose D is strongly considering going to U Del I believe I’m impartial. Both are tremendous programs that you should be proud to have the honor of choosing between.

To me the biggest positive of PSU is the job placement. It was certainly the reputation of the school which got me my first job. My biggest concern about the school is its size. Back when I went, it was easy for an undecided student to get lost. Also keep in mind that there are limited number of slots for each major based on GPA.

I can’t speak to the UDel experience, but I can tell you that I’ve never met an unhappy Blue Hen. How significant is it to you that U Del has a Fashion Merchandising?

As you review the positives and negatives of each program, you need to evaluate which would potentially impact you, and which would be insignificant. The key is to find the “match”!

GOOD LUCK!
