PLEASE Help me!!!! FAFSA

Lots of questions in one thread:

So, my mother know nothings about the FAFSA. I'm on my own, yay. Using my mothers information, but her w2's were just sent today in the mail so she won't receive them for a few days.
A few school's "priority" deadlines are today, what should I do?
Also, if she doesn't have her w2's can I can use a paystub from december?
Will that provide enough information to submit the fafsa or do you have to wait for your parents to file taxes?
What if they don't file taxes?

You can estimate her income from her last paystub of 2009. If you send in an estimated FAFSA, go back later after your mom has completed her taxes or gotten her final w2s and do a correction. You’ll still have met the deadline by getting in the estimated form on time.

You have three options as to the status of your mom’s taxes: “will file”, “have completed”, and “will not file.”

Is she does not file taxes at all, choose will not file. If she will file, or might file, choose “will file” and then later when you go back to do the corrections based on her tax return switch the status to “completed.”

If she might file, but then turns out not having to file, switch the status accordingly when you get your final figures based on her w2 form(s).

Wow thank you so much! I’ve only looked at the FAFSA form once, but I didn’t know if there was other information I needed. I don’t think she’s going to file taxes this year, so will I have to worry about AGI or whatever. (someone mentioned you need that figure)

The FAFSA will ask for her income. For a person with a very simple financial sitation that will be gross wages (before taxes and other deductions) + interest income (if any) + unemployment payments (if any). That will give you a decent approximation of her final AGI.

Even if your mom doesn’t file income taxes (because perhaps her income is too low)…you still have to put her adjusted gross income on the FAFSA.

What does the AGI equal? Can I find that on the paystub?

See post #4, above.

Why isn’t the FAFSA requiring me to put in my/my mother’s income and assets information? It asks if I want to skip. When I look at the summary, my FAFSA looks practically blank! Help, advice, please!

Shay, what questions has it asked you beyond routine identification stuff?

Basically, parent’s income - and AGI. After that, it said “would you like to skip mothers income/assets information?” Then, it never asked for my financial information, it just went to the confirmation page. Maybe because of her income? I’m unsure.

So you have answered questions about your own income and assets, yeah? And is your mother your sole custodial parent? That’s the impression I get. When you say you answered questions about your parent’s income, you mean hers, right? So I’m not following when you then go on to say it asks if you want to skip questions about her income. Didn’t you already answer questions about her income?

I would say, go back, read the questions carefully, make sure you’ve filled them in correctly. It may be something glitchy with the app, or it may be that your mother’s income is low enough that you’re below some threshold and are not required to answer questions about your mother’s assets.
