I am mostly interested in schools around the New York/Boston area, such as NYU and Emerson.

What other schools do you think I would enjoy/get into.

I am interested mostly in the performing arts.

One thing you should really keep in mind is that all of these audition programs are very competitive. Different schools weight the audition vs. academics differently (I think it's 50/50 at NYU, for instance).

Safeties should be schools with good drama programs that do not require auditions.

If you don't have them, you could end up with 0 acceptances, just by virtue of the selectivity of the programs. It happened to my friend this year. Plan well to avoid her predicament.

all the schools mentioned are conservatories that give BFA degrees-- is this what you want? you might also want to find some BA/non-audition schools to balance it out. others to check out (not 100% sure about their academics):
fordham (audition BA in NYC)
boston university (audition BFA)
hofstra? (long island) i don't know much.
not really in your area, but still....penn state (i think audition? BA) and ithaca (audition BFA and interview BA)
if you haven't yet gone over to the arts major and musical theatre major boards....go go go. you can still get good advice on straight theatre from the MT board because it's so active, and they have forums within that for specific theatre schools too.
