Please Help Me Find a School I'll Be Happy With

My first choice schools are New College of Florida and University of Florida, but I am kind of unhappy with both of them. I am from upstate New York and have always wanted to go to school in the north. I have this feeling that the education won't be as good here in Florida, and that I won't be very happy at one of those schools either. Please tell me some schools I can be happy with; or, if you want, you can assure me that I will be getting a good education at UF or NCF, and will have good chances of going to an ivy league graduate school.

GPA:
Weighted 4.11
Unweighted 3.68

SAT:
Reading: 720
Writing: 670
Math: 570

I will have my AA when I graduate, but am willing to do the full 4 years at any one of these colleges if I got in. I have a 4.0 in my college classes and expect to keep that up for a total of 63 credit hours or 21 classes. I am in the honors society at the college (Phi Theta Kappa).

My class rank is 29 out of 105. I'm not sure how competitive my high school is, but I know it is somewhat competitive since it is a collegiate high school and most students only take college classes. They also require a 3.0 to get into the high school.

As far as extra curriculars go, I have over 150 community service hours and am an assistant officer of my school's Digital and Media Arts Club - though I've only been in the club starting this year (12th grade). I have also helped out around my community setting up concerts (rock concerts) and even performing in some of them for charity.

I want to major in Film/Cinema Studies or English Literature.

I live with my mother (single parent) and her income is around 150,000. For these schools I will need some financial aid and am wondering how much of it I will get. I would also like to know if these schools are worth the price. If I don't go to these schools I will either go to University of Florida or New College of Florida. Will I be able to get into good graduate schools (i.e. ivy league) if I come from one of those?

Thank you.

First, there is no such thing as a “good chance” to get into an ivy. It’s a lottery. Truthfully your undergrad institution name doesn’t matter that much; just your test scores and college GPA and maybe letters of recommendation.

Second, if you need financial aid and will graduate high school with a diploma and an associate’s degree, I think you’d be nuts to spend four years earning a bachelor’s. If you can get your credits transferred, you could get that bachelor’s in two years and put the money you save towards grad school (and towards food since when you graduate with a Ph.D. in film or literature you’ll be unemployed and hungry).

Assuming you live in florida now, I’d see if UF doesn’t have an articulation agreement that grants you junior status right off the bat for the AA. If not, I’d give New College very serious consideration.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. UF will take all of my credits, but wouldn’t New College also? I’m also worried about coming in with 2 years already done; I feel like I would be at a disadvantage. I will have taken my College Composition classes at a state college but will be in the same class as people who learned their writing skills at a well-respected college. Do you think I will be be able to adapt to writing at a higher level relatively quickly? I’m worried I will start getting poor grades on my papers because my writing skills are sub-par.

Also, like I said, wouldn’t New College accept my credits as well? I could go to New College and still graduate in 2 years right?

P.S. Any opinions on whether I should go to New College or UF are highly appreciated.

To be honest ivy league grad schools are not obscenely hard to get into. For example although Stanford is not ivy it has a 26% acceptance rate for grad as compared 7-8% for undergrad due to the substantially smaller amount of people going to grad school.

Really? So do you think my chances are good if I were to come out of New College or UF with a decent (3.7-4.0) GPA?
