Please Help me find reach, match and safety

I am Hispanic living in New York with a single mother and 2 siblings. Our income is 20k a year and this makes me eligible for the HEOP program that New York State Colleges and Universities have.
I want to major in Political Science

My GPA Is 3.3(uw) My school doesn't weight grades just the rank.
My Rank is 28/450. Top 6%!
My school is doesn't really prepare kids for higher education really well as you can tell by my rank and gpa.
They only send about 45% of the students to a 4 year college.
I took all honors and AP classes throughout High school. 3 AP classes and 12 Honors classes.
SAT - 1120/1600 and 1600/2400 (HEOP for NYU the range was 1000-1250)
SAT 2- 550 US History, 560 Spanish w/ Listening
I guess I'm not a good test taker lol.

EC-
-Volunteered at Gurwin Nursing Home - 11th
-Select Orchestra - Viola - 9-12
-NYSSMA - 9-11th grade
-Tutor- Little cousins who barely speak English and parents also don't, so they can do better in school.
-Sales Associate at Staples - worked 40 hours in Summer and working 20 hours during school. [ My whole paycheck goes into helping my mom pay monthly bills not for my self]
-Also, I can't do much after school activities because my mom works late and I can't leave my little sister home alone so she is my first priority.(IDK if i should include this in the application, might look like an excuse)
-Online Forum leader(graphic design forum, 800+ members)[not sure if i should add this]

I am hoping to applying to some top school in New York because I am eligible for the HEOP program. But I also need some match and safety schools.

NYU- Applied ED(hopefully they accept me for the HEOP program)

Other schools
Fordham University -NY
Siena College -NY
Colgate? -NY
Hofstra University -NY
American University and George Washington University (These schools are in D.C so they do not have the HEOP program so I'm guessing they way out of reach.)

I want a school with a good politics program any suggestion? Also my first choice would be a school in NYC. (NYU and Fordham)
Please and TY.

What’s the HEOP program? I’ve never heard of it before.

Your grades are rank are good, and it’s very impressive that you seem to have challenged yourself a lot.

“SAT - 1120/1600 and 1600/2400 (HEOP for NYU the range was 1000-1250)
SAT 2- 550 US History, 560 Spanish w/ Listening
I guess I’m not a good test taker lol.”- Consider taking the ACT. It’s different from the SAT, and you may do better on it.

“-Also, I can’t do much after school activities because my mom works late and I can’t leave my little sister home alone so she is my first priority.(IDK if i should include this in the application, might look like an excuse)”- It might not be a bad idea to include this in your application. In fact, some applications have a section that asks if there are any circumstances that may have affected your performance in school or participation in after school activities (and family obligations definitely count for this).

American and GWU are both great schools, however like you said they don’t have the HEOP program (not sure what it is but I’m assuming it has something to do with $$$?). I don’t know about American, but GWU is very expensive, however, they’re supposed to be pretty good about giving need-based financial aid to those who qualify (with a $20k income, you should definitely qualify). GWU is very strong in political science (the location is a big plus in this).

This is NYU’s definition.
[Opportunity Program Home](http://www.nyu.edu/op/heop_eligibility.html)

The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) at New York University is an academic and financial support program funded by the New York State Education Department and NYU. HEOP provides access to NYU for selected low income students with high academic potential.

Most if not all NY Colleges and Universities have this program.

For single mother and 3 children you have to have an income of $37,240 or lower. My mom makes 20k so I def. qualify for HEOP. Also HEOP has a SAT range.
NYU range for HEOP is 1000-1250(V+M).
And of course you have to be a New York Residents.

Also I am first in family to ever go to college.
Thanks for the advice Mollie

is this program for public AND private colleges in New York State. If so, these are the best schools for political science/government in New York State:

Bard College
Columbia University
Syracuse University
Vassar College

Good Luck with your selection and congrats on being the first person in your family to go to college! People like you should be commended!

Yes the public schools such as the state university of new york(SUNY) school have a program like HEOP but it is called “EOP” but I can get accepted to SUNY without EOP lol. (except Binghimton and Stony Brook).

thanks Pierre for those suggestions! All of them have the HEOP program except Vassar =[.
And Columbia I think is impossible for me to get into even with HEOP lol.
I will look into Bard and Syracuse!
Thanks alot Pierre =]

Here is a list of schools that participate if anyone is curious.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to check out the SUNYs for Poly Sci. At SUNY Albany you might have a chance at some state level internships or something like that.

Well, I am not an admissions officer, so I dont know how they balance upbringing, income, social situation, minority status WITH SATs. On first glance, your SAT’s are low for Fordham and NYU. It never hurts to try. Your grades indicate you perhaps can do the work. So maybe that helps.

I would REALLY focus on match and safety schools and look HARD at schools with SAT scores like yours. Siena is one such school. HEOP is a New York State program. So look at schools in New York State primarily. St. Johns, Siena, Canisius, Syracuse, SUNY schools, CUNY schools, etc.

It doesnt hurt to try to reach, but its also very prudent to focus on schools where you will likely be accepted with those scores. If your dream schools come in for you, fine. But if not, you are not left in the dark.

Good luck.

Thanks nocousin and Erin’s dad =].
Siena College is actually up on my list. It’s close to New York States capital, Albany, so it would offer great internship for politics.
I will apply to some SUNY and CUNY to hopefully be my safety.
Just can’t put my finger on a match yet. Hopefully Siena College is a match for me.

As a urm and HEOP applicant, your SATs are probably in the ball-park for Fordham. Hofstra is probably a safety in terms of admission, but NOT a financial safety. Colgate is more of a reach and it isn’t particularly close to NYC; also many urn students find it conservative and lacking in diversity. Other LACs in NYS and close to NYC that you might want to consider are: Bard (SAT optional), Sarah Lawrence (same) - - maybe even Vassar (always a good bet for boys).

The smaller W’chester LACs (Iona, Manhattanville) would probably be safeties, as would SUNY Purchase; SUNY New Paltz is probably a match. If you look out of state, you should consider some of the SAT optional schools (Muhlenberg, Ursinus, Holy Cross, Wheaton, Conn College, Provid College) - - you can get a full list of SAT opional schools from fairtest.org.

Good luck

Thank you for the info. Especially on Colgate. =]

I will def. look at the colleges you reccomended.

I got accepted to NYU through HEOP! (early decision)
So excited.=D

Congratulations! That’s wonderful!

Congratulations! This is so beautiful…
