Hey guys, so I'm gonna be a senior at High School soon and I want to do a Communications Major later in College.
The following are my stats:

GPA - 3.3 W/ 3.0 UW
IB Diploma student - math, economics, English (HL) and french, art, physics (SL)
Sats - 2000
ACT - taking it soon, expecting something over 27 or 30

International student (Would this be a negative in my application?)

ECs

1) Published several articles in the newspaper
2) Summe intership at a publication agency as a writer
3) summer internship at a marketing firm
4) been doing MUN for 4 years now
5) editor of a magazine at my school
5) Been invovled in an environmental club at school - took it seriously, worked a lot and got to represent the school at an international conference, secretary of the club (freshmen year)
6) A LOT of community service experience
7) been playing acoustic guitar for 4 years now

With these stats, can you guys suggest any "safety" schools for my major? I will be applying to Utexas Austin, UWisconsin Madison, Berkely (reach only), NYU (reach only), USC, UIUC and some others schools...Most of the schools I've thought of are either a reach or a "possible" only. I need to find safety schools for my major but I'm not sure where exactly to start...:/ Also, I'm looking for a urban/suburban campus with a large student population (a lively place?)..and thats pretty much my basic requirements. Any help/suggestions?

It looks like all of the schools on your list are pretty much reaches. I think you need to do some research online and with some guide books to find schools that are matches/safetys. Offhand a couple I’d recommend you research include SUNY Buffalo, Rutgers, URI, and maybe Marist and Quinnipiac (although the last two are mid-sized schools).

You may want to look into University of Oklahoma as a possible safety. One of my apartment mates is a communications major and she loves the program. I’ve toured its facilities and was quite impressed. The school meets all of your requirements; suburban, large, and like many of the schools on your list, enormous school spirit.

If you are an international applicant, there are no safeties in the US except for the very small number of institutions that guarantee admissions based on grades and ACT/SAT score for international applicants. If you can afford the full cost of your education, what would be a match for a US applicant will be a reach.

Sit down with your parents and find out how much they can pay each year for your education. Until you know that, you can’t begin this process.

How much will your parents pay each year? for a school to be a safety, it must be affordable.

UTexas is a big reach as well…UIUC is also a reach…so is USC.

Your GPA and test scores are not high enough for a number of your schools…especially schools with competitive admissions like USC, Berkeley, Texas, etc.

About the costs, my parents are currently able to back me up financially (which I am grateful for) …The main concern seems to be getting a good acceptance. umm…I had another trhead in the “Texas Colleges” section and I was told that my english scores, ECs, letter of recomendations, SATs/ACTs matter more than my actual GPA…since what I’d like to pursue is Communications (Advertising or PR if the university has those concentrations. To what extent do you guys think this is true??
