Direction:
Existentialist Jean Paul Sartre believed in personal freedom, holding that man is free to ?write the script? for his own life: He can blame no one else if his life is a ?poor performance.? On the other hand, William Blake and others in the Romantic movement felt that the expectations and restraints of social severely limit a person: They believed that schooling, organized religion, and other social institutions imprison a persona?s mind and spirit.

Assignment:
What is your opinion of the claim that there is no such thing as free choice, that to some degree, we are always bound by the rules of society?

This is my essay:
I agree with the claim that we are always bound by the rules of society. It is true in every aspects of our daily life.
For instance, several years ago, when I was still a child, my family was going to a picnic at the outskirt of our city, there were a lot of cars on the highway from the city to it?s outskirt, but there are few on the opposite side. Then I asked my father,? Why we can not go on the other side of the road, we can save much time by doing so and it seems no dangerous because there almost no cars on the other side.? My father smiled and said to me kindly,? No, we must obey the traffic rules whether it is convenient or not. If we disobey the rule, we will be punished and we may in dangerous.? I knew from that time that there were traffic rules when we are driving, we must consider the rules first though they might not be convenient to us.
Another example is now I am applying to colleges in the U.S. I always ask my favorite universities and colleges that whether I can be admitted without taking the SATs and without submitting a lot of application forms that made me confused. Obviously, they said no to me. They told me that I should follow the general policy in the so called ?admission process?, no one can have a priority so that he or she can be admitted without any application forms. I knew from there answers that we must obey the admission rules when we applying to colleges though they were a hard and tedious work to us.
Also, as a Chinese people, I must obey more rules because our country is famous for its etiquette in its people?s behaviors. Before a meal, we must greet out parents. When having meals, we must let people younger than us eat first. When making big decisions, we must consider carefully our elders? suggestions without making our choices freely. We must follow the rules because our ancestors made them and had followed them for years.
From my own experiences above, we can have a conclusion that we can not always bound by the rules of society. Whether we wish it or not, we can not do things as free choices, we must follow the rules!

This is like a 4- no paragraph indentation and too short. Need solid examples. Most importantly need organization.

Ya, this is about a 4 or a 5. Should put some literary/ historical examples (tend to be more persuasive than personal experience). Also, kinda short and needs better organization. I'd put a bit more emphasis on your intro.

I'd give you about a 5 cumulative....
I'm Chinese too! But apparently I've been in the US longer than you.

My guess is that this essay would receive a score of 3/4 out of 6, for a total of about 6 points out of 12. This person makes a lot of mistakes that some of my friends who immigrated as older kids from other countries make as well.. so I understand where the grammar slips are coming from.

From someone who scored perfectly on the SAT essay, please - just get a thesis together.
