so, i have to pick out the colleges i am applying to soon, and I wanted to do industrial engineering. My unweighted GPA is 3.75 and my weighted is 3.97. Im really not too sure if I want to do industrial engineering or accounting. i took a community college accounting course, and I liked it... i did very well. i also want to do industrial engineering because it seems pretty fun and they have higher starting salaries. my sat score is 2130, and i have decent ec's. the only instate industrial engineering schools for me are cal poly, berkeley, stanford, and usc (i live in california), and my parents really want me to stay instate. i cant get into any of these schools with my scores, (cal poly is a maybe, but my parents dont really like that school) and they dont want me to go to community college either. What do i do. should i just apply as an accounting major? i guess i dont hate the subject, but im so stressed right now. i know im not really asking a clear cut question, but im just throwing in a bunch of information. please, any advice would help.

Who said you can’t get into those schools? What’s your UC GPA/UW 10-11? ECs?

what were/are your math courses junior and senior year, and how did you do in them junior year? what AP courses have you taken or are you taking? physics?

Don’t major in something that you don’t want. That would be a disaster. You won’t want to spend a lifetime in some career that isn’t YOU.

You need to apply to all the Calif publics that have that major and also some privates…and also some OOS publics/privates that will be affordable because of aid or merit.

Then if you don’t get into any Calif publics, you will still have options.

BTW…which Cal Poly and why did your parents not like it?
And why do your parents want you to stay instate? Cost? or another reason?

What do you like about IndustrialE? Maybe there are some other similar Eng’g disciplines that would work?

What is your M+CR SAT score?

SAT : 2130, Verbal:640, Math:740, Writing: 750
SAT II: Math 2:780, Chem: 760
AP Scores: Chemistry-4, US History-4, Calc AB (I did not take the class and didnt study. I needed to take the test for some program, and I got a 3, but hopefully it wont weigh as much because I didnt take the class yet)

GPA/Grades.
My GPA is 3.75 so far unweighted. (should i apply regular decision because i can get my gpa up to 3.79)
I am still a junior
my school doesnt rank, but im around the 70th percentile.

Ok…your W score doesn’t mean much. You have a 1370 M+CR…are you retesting? That is low for USC (where your sister goes) USC is very test-score-crazy.

How much will your parents pay each year?

You took pre-calc for junior year…are you taking calc or AP calc for senior year?

Can you clarify…are you a senior or junior NOW? Your quote says “junior” but you give junior year grades. ??

Calculate your CSU/UC GPA: <a href=“GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub”>http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/. For Cal Poly SLO you also need to include 9th grades in your calculation.
Industrial Engineering is only offered by a few Cal States such as Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona and SJSU along with the schools you mentioned above… With your scores you have a decent shot at all schools. Industrial Engineering is not as competitive as some of the other engineering majors such as Mechanical, Civil and BioEngineering.
For Cal Poly Pomona it would be a safety. My husband’s company recruits engineers from both Cal Polys and prefers their engineers to many of the UC grads… Tell you parents to do some research about the schools since they are highly rated for engineering.

Ok…so both Cal Polys have that E discipline. So, I’m guessing the parents don’t like Pomona. Well, there is SLO and it is “better” in a number of ways.

@mom2collegekids im a senior now, and my uc gpa is quite bad

i believe my uc gpa is l ike 3.95, which is less than teh average of most uc engineering programs

What is the avg UC GPA for eng’g? If that is bad??

Anyway…which Cal Poly did your parents not like? and why?

@toesockshoe and please answer the other Q’s.

@toesockshoe: Show your parents this link regarding Cal Poly SLO
<a href=“Cal Poly grads have highest salaries of all CSUs, higher than most UCs - Cal Poly San Luis Obispo - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/1032279-cal-poly-grads-have-highest-salaries-of-all-csus-higher-than-most-ucs.html
Also have them check the West Coast Regional rankings for SLO if they feel it is not a good school.

@mom2collegekids i like industrial engineering because it is half engineering and half business. i dont really like engineering but my parents kinda forced it upon me. industrial engineering looked pretty interesting in terms of what you can do what it. logistics and ergonomics seemed interesting to me.

my total sat score is 2130, and my math+reading is 1380. my parents dont like cal poly SLO (they dont like any csu’s)
anyway, there is a likely chance that i might not get into the school because my gpa is quite low, and i dont think my sat makes up for it.

my parents want me to stay in state because they are afraid they are gonna miss me. i told them ill visit, but they said they didnt miss my sister cause she was instate and if she needed to come home, she could have done so in 2-3 hours. they dont want me to go too far away because they dont want me to come home every 6 months or so. they want me home like once a month or 2.
my parents are pretty well off financially, i dont think cost is a problem, but they keep telling me to take advantage of instate tuition, which i dont get considering they paid my sisters full tuition (60k/year) at usc.

Also, I took pre calc honors last year (junior year), and I got A’s. For senior year, I am doing a program where I take all my classes at a community college, so I wont be taking AP calc, but I will be taking calc at community college which I think is equivalent to AP calc. here is the progam description: http://www.fuhsd.org/collegenow

i think this answers all your questions; thank you so much for taking your time.

@mom2collegekids also, here is a link to the average gpa’shttp://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/freshman/profiles/ .

keep in mind that engineering is quite comptative, so i really dont stand too good a chance at berkeley (the only UC industrial engineering school)

CPSLO is known for eng - a friend’s son is a ME student there and doing well and liking it. Graduated from a public HS in CA.
