Hi! I looked at all of the colleges that I am going to apply to, and I realized, "I don't think it's possible to apply to 35 colleges" now I do not intend on applying to that many (3000+ in app fees) but I like them all
So can you guys give me a reason to apply? Or not to apply? Thanks! By the way I would prefer it if it were more of a factual answer, instead of insults towards the school
Also I plan to do premed, and for certain colleges I know I am definitely applying there, so those ones are fine
Schools:
Harvard
Princeton
Yale
Columbia
Cornell
Brown
Stanford
Duke
UChicago
WashU
Northwestern
JHU
Vanderbilt (Definitely applying here)
Georgetown (definitely applying here)
UC B, LA, SD
UVA (instate, definitely applying here)
WM (def. Applying here)
BC
GA tech
UWashington-Seattle
Umiami
Va Tech
George Mason (def. Applying here)
JMU (def applying here)
UTKnox
UT-Austin
Pomona
Davidson
CMC
Williams
Thanks! This is a topic for choosing the schools, but if you want stats I can give them

Take off those oos publics unless your parents will pay all costs.

Narrow down those ivies by culture that u like.

Give stats

What is your budget. How much will family pay.

Actually my mom is completely willing to move to California or Washington (she loves the west coast and is most likely moving over there anyway once I graduate hs) so OOS tuition will only be paid for one year (don’t worry that part is covered)
Also my parents are divorced if that clears anything up
Stats:
3.85-9 GPA UW (no APs yet)
Hopefully a 2200 on the sat (i am going to take it, at least, until I get that but I am studying for it, and while it may be wishful thinking I sure hope I get that score)
Top 10%
Great (in my opinion) private that sends 15~ to uVA, 15~ to WM, around 5 to Georgetown, 5 to brown and Cornell, and a few to hypcm
It’s crazy, but I love it
Thats all the statistics that I know… I will take math 1 sat at the end of next year when I finish al2/trig honors
I am also taking the hardest “track” for classes
I am going to fill out the fafsa, but I will most likely not receive much/any aid

This is not a chance thread-I will make one of those next year once I get act/sat scores back
The stats are only as a guideline as to where I should apply, not where I could get in
Thanks!
Also I am half white and half Asian

your parent(s) need to move one full year ahead to delare residency.

Knock off any that you cannot provide two or more rock-solid reasons for wanting to go there.

The ones that stand out to me as being candidates for this:
UW-Seattle
UT-Knoxville
VTech
BC
UCLA/Berkeley/UCSD (pick one or two to apply to)
UChicago/WashU/Northwestern (again, pick the one that interests you most)
Pomona/CMC (same)

You said ou were definitely applying to six colleges. In my opinion, six colleges are more than enough to apply to, as long as you are completely sure you will get in at least one of them. Most people don’t apply to more than ten.

You need to find one or more safeties first. These must be schools that you will be admitted to, and which you will be able to afford without debt.

George Mason U is a good safety (instate tuition rates)

I would narrow down your list to these schools (I’m instate VA too):

Duke
Vanderbilt (Definitely applying here)
Georgetown (definitely applying here)
UVA (instate, definitely applying here)
WM (def. Applying here)
Va Tech
George Mason (def. Applying here)
JMU (def applying her)
U of Mary Washington or Christopher Newport for a second safety?
Davidson

Thanks guys! By the way I am adding the GW. From what you all said, plus a little bit more “digging”, I think I can cross off:
UChicago - I know its a phenomenal school, but I don’t think I could do well there (the whole where fun goes to die rumors…) it’s supposed to be an extremely hard school and I am not sure I could be ready for that type of extremely hard…
CMC - this Claremont college is more focused on economics and finance, whereas Pomona is more focused on the sciences… Also if I go to Pomona I could cross register there if I wanted to
UMiami-again I know it’s a phenomenal school, but Miami is waaayyyy too hot. I know, stupid reason… But Florida is a little too down south for me
UTK - OOS public and It’s kinda pricey for me…
UT-Austin - OOS and pricey and it’s hot. I know it’s a great school and all but that is kind of a trifecta that won’t work with me
Thanks again, and if I have anything wrong, please tell me:)

This is the revised list:
HPYCS
Cornell
Brown
Duke
Washington university in saint Louis
Northwestern
Johns hopkins
Vanderbilt
Georgetown
George Washington
UC berkeley
UCLA
UC-San Diego
UVA
WM
BC
Georgia Tech
University of Washington Seattle
Virginia tech
George mason
James Madison
Pomona
Davidson
Williams
Thanks!

Also @mom2collegekids
What do you mean by “cut down on ivies by cultures that I like”
Can you explain that to me? Because I have searched on the Internet, and I can’t find anything on the atmosphere of the college

depending on how much you want to narrow it down to, i’d recommend just cutting all of them where you didn’t say ‘def applying here’

what are your ECs? You can provide us with that and that may help us determine which you would have the best chances at or which you would best fit in at. I’m interested in pre-med too. I would definitely take off UW-Seattle. Financially they are hurting and unless you are a resident of Washington, Idaho, Montana… you don’t have good chances at getting into their med school. UW Med School favors residents in those states, just at the Oregon Health Sciences University favors Oregon residents and the like. Go to a private university that has a med school!!

If you’re gonna cut off UT Knoxville and UT Austin for being pricey OOS publics, you should DEFINITELY cut off UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego and University of Washington.

OP- this was directed at you re: applying to any UC
"your parent(s) need to move one full year ahead to delare residency. "
You will NOT get the instate rate for any UC. One of your parents HAS TO BE LIVING IN CALIF. ALREADY to qualify for instate. So If they dont want to pay $$32 K + each year for crowded lecture halls and another 15-20 for R, B etc, take them off your list.

Actually my parents are willing to pay full freight for one year while they declare residency, unless you are saying no matter what, because I am currently a va resident, I will not get instate tuition? (for UW and UC’s)
I’m sorry I was a little confused
Also I like the schools enough where I would be fine (and my parents would be, too) to move to the corresponding states
However I can cross of GATech and VATech-I am not much of a tech person, I just figured I should apply there because all of my friends are, too (dont worry those are the only schools where I would have applied to because my friends did as well)
I would like to go to a place that has a great premed program, which includes the UW honors college and the UC system.
College count (LOL): (only) 26 schools.

Not sure why you want to leave VA, a great state for education. I am in CA and I really think UCs are great schools, but the crowding situation over here may create a five year college experience. My close friends son is a UCD student, he has to forego an intern opportudity to catchup classes in CC so that he can graduate in 4 years.

I am eternally grateful for a professor in W&M where I attended their summerschool(non-matriculated). I accidentally took CALC II without first took CALC I, when he learned the situation and my willingness to stay in the class, he took personal attention to my delima and had me stay in his office 2 hours per day to catchup. I worked day and night for it and ended up an A.

YOU will NOT get Calif instate residency, period. Many have tried to “game the system” before, and it won’t work, trust me. We CC old timers see posts every years by naive applicants who dont do research, and realize too late that they wont get the instate Calif tuition rate.Their are threads right now on the FA forum about this very issue. So delete the UC’s from you list if you cant afford $$ 50 total cost for 4+ years. Besides, you have a great instate University!

I know… I love the VA schools, but I also think it would be great if I moved to the west coast.
sigh
