Ahhh soo I am your typical High School Senior who is scared to death about the whole college admissions thing so I need some advice! So far I've been deferred from a whopping 3 colleges (Boston College, Georgetown, and UNC-Chapel Hill) and have yet to get in somewhere. Although I realize that these schools are really competitive and I still cant stop thinking about all of this. So point of this is I LOVED Emory, applied ED Round II. Now the problem is for the common app essay (the short one about the extracurricular activity) I wrote a really bad one :( My BC application was due and I just had to get something submitted so I sent in something less then stellar. I dont know how much that essay may or may not affect my chances at admission so I was just wondering if someone thinks I should like send in a supplemental one and ask to disregard the other one? I'm not sure if that works or not but I REALLY want to go to Emory and I think ED ROund II is realistically my best shot at a school I love. If anybody has some advice on what I should do it would be awesome. Also, if you feel like chancing me go back to a post a made a while ago, that would be really nice

Before you write that essay, can I possibly know your academic status (SAT, SAT II, AP, TOEFL, GPA, etc.)?

Yea no problem, heres just like the page from the Chances thread I posted a while ago.

Stats:

SAT - 1430/2030 (Crit Reading- 760) (Math- 670) (Writing- 600) *Only took it once but from what I know Emory doesn't really look at Writing too heavily
SAT II - World History - 620 Math 1 - 620
GPA - Not sure, but probably around a 3.5-3.6 (Unweighted)
Rank - No Rank

Subjective:

Essays: Personal Statement I'd say it was OK-good, nothing spectacular (about my arab heritage and travels) I was really satisfied with my Why Emory essay though, touched up on alot of specifics and showed how I'd be a perfect fit! And then of course theres the extracurricular essay... :(
Teacher Recs: I waived my right to see them but both are brilliant teachers that I have an incredible relationship with so I'm assuming really good
Counselor Rec: I'd also say pretty good considering we know each other well
Hook: Well I'm Arab (Half Lebanese/Half Egyptian) and have dual citizenship from Egypt so I'm a pretty unique minority. I speak Arabic fluently. Also, I've got some extensive traveling experiences (over 40 countries)

Personal:

Location: Queens, New York
High School Type: SMALL Private School, moderately competitive
Ethnicity: Middle Eastern
Gender: M
Applied for Financial Aid: No

Other:

Extra Curricular: Co-chair of my student government, Captain of Varsity Soccer Team, President/Co-Founder of Amnesty International, President of Math League, President of Model United Nations, Varisty Tennis member, Contributor to school newspaper, Vice-President of Community Service Club. I spent a month in rural Tanzanian village with a student travel group to do community service projects (mostly working at a primary school teaching English and building a classroom). Following year I did a similar one to Madagascar working on a deforestation project for a month. I also interned at the Arab league in Lebanon for a month doing administrative and clerical work. I've traveled to over 40 countries so thats pretty unique? (But also shows that I'm over privileged)

AP's? Highest level of math? Rigor of courseload? Difficult to give you an idea without that....

Hm... it's really hard to tell you. Are you an international student or permenant resident in the states?

Take SAT I again in January and please get 30 points more on math sections. Since you took SAT once, your score looks really good. However, if you just improve your math score, it would be really better!

Emory only looks highest combined scores; it would be fine for you to screw up other sections but math section

Also Emory considers Jaunuary SAT score if you send a email to consider it to one of your region counselor (New York City counselor: scott.allen@emory.edu)

Your GPA is way to low, frankly speaking. If possible, can you please post what courses you took during your high school? (From 9th to 12th)

I have to check after you post it!

You know GPA is one of the most important part of admissions
(In case of my friends attending Emory right now, his SAT score was really good (2200ish), but his GPA was low; since he took many challenging courses in his high school, he was accepted Emory-

Show your "diversity"! I think this is the most showable factor for you, and try to be creative in your why Emory essay-

Well I got to an INCREDIBLY small private school where possible class choices are super limited, so although my class course may not seem that impressive, its as rigorous as it gets for my school. I'm pretty sure they factor that in that I was limited but I challenged myself as much as I could. I'm not sure if I can take the SAT in January since I did ED II though, or can I?

I was born and raised here but did my best efforts to play up my diversity. I think I did a solid job with my Why Emory Essay, I spoke about how I'd be a perfect fit for their majors and stuff. I realize my GPA is definitely whats keeping me back.

9th +10th Grade- Standard classes, my school doesnt offer any APs or Honors classes for 9th and 10th, only Honors math which I took
11th Grade- AP Euro( I got a 4), Honors Math, AP World History (Indepenedent Study-I got a 4)
12th Grade- AP biology, AP U.S. History, AP Calculus AB, Geology, Philsophy, English 12

And thanks so much guys for your input, really means alot

I think you are ok...that being said, and I don't have the hard statistics in front of me, EDII may be tough....I think I read somewhere previously that Emory takes very few additional students during that round (possibly as low as 100)....You can't change your GPA at this point; I don't think improving your SAT is relevant....Good Luck! Where else are you applying for safeties?

Really? I heard they accepted the same percentage of students ED II as ED I.... Maybe its because there are less ED II applicants? As for safeties, I already got into Tulane (far from what I'm aiming for). I applied to BU and Wheaton as general safeties. I realize neither are 100% sure but my counselor said I could play the risk, and worse comes to worse I end up at Tulane? Hopefully not though. If you have any suggestions of alternative safeties where the deadlines havent passed I'd be glad to hear them

I got deferred from Wheaton EA (which, with Emory, is the only school I'm really considering at this point), and I really have no clue why. I'm going to blame it on a bad teacher rec (he did all my recs, but didn't want me to go to Wheaton so he wrote it like he was retarded - aka - Michelle is a smart student. She is an honest student. She is a personable student. Michelle is an outstanding student who would do well at your school.) I read it and it made me cringe a little inside, but couldn't do anything about it due to the deadline.

Anyways, I prolly wouldn't know, but I'd say you have a fair shot. Not sure whether the high disparity between your verbal/math scores will hurt you or not, or how badly GPA will bring you down, but definitely good luck!

Hm...HotChillyNJazzy, if you back up your low GPA with teachers' recommendations OR extracurricular activities, it would be fine and you can get in! Since you applied Emory for ED II, taking January SAT means nothing actually (I thought u applied for RD).

Show why your GPA is low indirectly through additional essay or recommendation (you cannot show, but your teacher can show why your GPA is low positively)

Hey, your GPA increases from freshmand to first semester of senior?

Mashimlro, well the deadline for ED II already passed and I sent in my application but from what I heard (indirectly from my guidance counselor) he said that my teacher recommendations were incredible. And not to be vain or anything but I feel like my extracurricular activities are also really good so I THINK I have those areas covered. As for how to show my low GPA indirectly, since my recommendations were already sent I cant do it that way but what do you mean by an additional essay?

My GPA was pretty much the same 10th and 11th grade, its usually a mix of lows 90s and like mid 80s. Emory wont see my first semester grades for Senior year though since they come out too late, but thats a good thing considering I didn't do too well...

Once again I REALLY appreciate everyones input! Originally Georgetown was my first choice but after I visited Emory I considered applying to Emory ED II even if I got into georgetown, so any more advice on how I can improve my chances would be awesome, or just general opinions on where I stand admissions wise, no matter how harsh or positive they may be

11th GPA is the most important thing!
Anyway Emory is good shot for you - I hope you get in :)
Emory is not that bad; although some of my friends were accepted JHU, Georgetown, Wash in St., or Duke, they decided to go to Emory with several reasons...

Never mind about additional Essay...
Only stuffs you should do from now on are HOPE and PRAY!

Thanks for the input mashimlro! So just your opinion though, I should I send a different extra curricular essay or just leave things how they are?

I'm really happy to see that you think I have a "good shot" I just LOVE Emory and it would be a dream come true, hopefully I'll be joining you there next year

Also, theres another thread about number of Early Decision Round II acceptance rate, anybody know anything about that? I remember my mom a while back (before I decided to apply ED II) saying that she read somewhere the acceptance rate was the same....

realize that emory is more cocmpetitive than all the schools you got deferred at
I think it was CRUCIAL that you write an amazing personal statement about your unique background and travels. it's a pity you say it was mediocre.
i'[m going to tell you not to worry. your GPA and got you deferred at those schools, but my guess is you're going to get accepted RD at some of those schools eventually

I think you have a better shot at Emory then the 3 schools you were deferred from. Geogetown and BC are incredibly competitive. UNC OOS is very competitive as well. I think you have a shot at Emory. However, some schools have January 15 deadlines, and if you do not have any safeties on your list, now is sthe time to apply.

Boston College is not incredibly competitive, and even as out of state, UNC is definitely not more competitive than Emory
but Emory's SAT will policy will definitely work in your favor

i agree with John, I think you have a great chance at Emory, although I still think you'll make it at Gtown as well. Carolina... forget it. they put you in the regular pool with in-state kids competin for the same place and who problaly got better stats, but I would be surprised if Emory wouldn't accept you. good luck

yeah, unc is a butt to get into without being instate, unless you have outta this world stats. and as for BC...I never thought it was competitive? I always though BU was more competitive, and even then, not that much so

Oh man, you should see the smile on my face guys.... Thank you SOOOO much for all your input! I knew from the beginning that Georgetown was going to be a long shot, and I read something that for UNC out-of-state the acceptance rate is somewhere in the teens, but I was a bit surprised about BC. Apparently they got a ridiculous amount of Early action apps this year. I agree that Emory was more competitve that BC, but I think applying ED makes a big difference compared to EA
