Please help me pick my major...

I'm planning on going to University of Arizona next fall. I'll have two year of "pre-business" classes before I have to pick declare a business major. I'm really good a math and I'm ok at writing/english and love business and managing money. I want to start out with a job making $60k+ and eventually make over $100k+ after working 5-10 years.

What major should I peruse? I'm thinking about accounting because its sound like a stable job but I'm worried that there's not a whole lot of room for advancement (aka making it over 100k) if I don't get hired by Big 4. I was also looking at MIS and economists. What sounds like a good fit for me? Thanks for the help.

Accounting is like Engineering. You're almost guaranteed to get a nice and steady job.

Why do you need a stable job? Are you married with kids? If you want a high paying job with lots of room for advancement you will most likely have to trade away stability.

If you want those good salaries, then consulting is probably right for you. Consultants come from a variety of undergraduate majors though.

If you like to manage money, then finance would be a good major.

Thanks VectorWega. You make a good point about a stable job. I guess I just want "a" job to be available thats high paying. I don't want to major in finance or MIS and find that there's no jobs available.

It depends on what you really want to do and being a consultant doesn't require you to major in business since you can special in medicine, law, tech, & etc where as consultanting is concern, so figure what kind you want to be.

Also major in something that you will enjoy and plan to do. Since consultants travel (some specialties requires more traveling) perhaps international business is a better a major and you might want to study a language or 2 to make yourself more efficient for the company & your job. If you're very analytical then major in strategy or management, if you want to be involve with sales, industries, trading, & advertising then major in marketing. Since math is up your league you can go for accounting or finance.

It depends on you but remember the finance industry will have change and there's no guarantee you'll be making 6 figures so don't rely on wall street for money & success look at other options. 09' & maybe '10 grads have to do that so LOOK FOR OPTIONS if things starts to tank again.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think I want to major in international business (hate foreign languages) and I don't think I want to major in marketing. Maybe I'll double major in finance and accounting. I don't graduate until 2012 so I'll have time to change if finance tanks. How hard would it be to double major in accounting and finance at an instate school (University of Arizona)?
