The reality is Ga Tech isn’t an option. It’s a transfer option. So the student really needs to decide between Bama and CSU .their two favorites and then CU, OU, and Arkansas in the background.
My son is an engineer at Bama. His two roomies from last summer went to Ga Tech. They also had Memphis, UTK, Houston, Ole Miss. One of the three between my son and his two roomies were invited back for next summer. It wasn’t the top ranked Ga tech kids. They’re still looking for work.
With hard work, a solid head on their shoulders and a little luck, the student can be fine no matter where they go.
And again no major was given. A marketing student at Ga Tech will not get the same possibilities as an operations student. And I’m guessing this student is less quant…so I’m that regard I don’t see the lift.
Like any school you’ll have winners and losers.
But g tech should not even be in the discussion unless the student goes to a community college intent fo transfer there. I’m short, it’s not a current option.
Hopefully the student finds a wonderful four year fit and has a great color guard experience and career after.
Scheller is a great option if she wants to transfer but what if she ends up liking her 1st school? Could make the choice more difficult. Plus it sounds like you would be full pay at GT for 3 years. That said, the opportunities at GT and Atlanta are fantastic.
Visit GT. I think the campus is nice but not everyone thinks so. Off campus has gotten sketchy lately and the saying “you don’t go to GT for the accommodations” is true. The dorms are mediocre and the food is awful.
Yes, thank you for that link. She missed the BAMA merit scholarships by 10 points. She is a couple of points away on the ACT which she took a year ago. She’s giving it another shot next month. She’s had a lot of math since then and some prep. Fingers crossed she can get a couple of extra points. We’re also holding out hope for the competitive scholarships offered.
Here is a bit more info on her accomplishments: She has strong leadership / extracurriculars through color guard / band. Our band is one in the top in the nation and honored to be one of the color guard co-captains. She also has over 150 plus volunteer hours with small animal rescue and she does it because she loves it. She is also a professional actress - she has studied film acting and and auditioned since she was in little for various tv shows and commercials. The jobs are difficult to book but she’s had successes. CapitalOne just used her as their color guard girl in social media ads for the College Football Playoffs. I mention this not to brag, but to give insight on her work ethic. As far as academics goes, she has a 4.45 unweighted GPA and 4.1 weighted GPA. We didn’t push her too hard on academics as we saw how rigorous the band / color guard program was. We let that take the lead and enjoyed a lot of great experiences from it. Our favorite (bucket list) experience was her marching in the Tournament of Roses Parade a few years ago. This year our band placed 5th at the National Competition in Indianapolis. They also are state silver medal winners as well as recipients of many other championship titles.
Also, thank you for the CSU love! You asked about her major, she is planning to study general business. You have really made good points about the BAMA campus being pretty, but not so much the surroundings. That’s how I feel about the University of Oklahoma. I can say that as I’m an Okie. Lol. You have really given me some good info here. I’m feeling empowered. Thank you - and everyone for taking the time to comment. It’s helping.
She should be comfortable with calculus. GT business requires higher level calculus but it is a tech school after all.
They’re pretty generous with transfer credits. They have a great online tool to see what transfers. She probably could transfer calculus from another school.
Do you mean her unweighted is 3.45 ? You have them reversed ? Typically unweighted is under 4 and certainly less than weighted ?
You may take a look at the SAT ? Maybe take a sample.
Either way, Make sure she preps via a book, a class/tutor (well worth the 90-100 $ an hour for an hour a week for 6 weeks or online resources. Sounds like she can get her score up but Bama doesn’t super score.
One more I want to throw out because scholarships aren’t impacted by tests. It’s big, it’s gorgeous and so it fits. U of Arizona. Look at their $$ Eller is a solid school.
I love your daughter’s story. These kids are tripping over each other academically to get into ivy, top LACs or top publics. Your daughter pursued her passion…colorguard and has lifetime memories. She works with pets because she loves it! That’s refreshing and how it should be because there’s plenty of kids who go to make your regular college and do great in life. Heck I’m failed in my major and still did fine. And many that go to the high pressure places and end up miserable.
How wonderful your daughters experience is. I hope she has a wonderful experience wherever she ends up.
So if she has a 4.1 then your school has an A+ at 4.33. Look at the Arizona link. No clue about color guard but you might go in expensively. It’s on par or better with others.
To me, Ga tech isn’t right even if you got in. It’s definitely tech heavy but anyway you need a school for now.
Good luck. Let us know how u finish abd congrats on the CSU scholarship.
I’ll have her check out U of Arizona. We haven’t been to GT in a while, so it will be interesting when we visit. My husband was an IE there and he actually does recruiting from there. He is liking the CSU option after the nice email / and scholarship info came through.
Anyway, besides GT, they are somewhat similar in reputations. Out of the area, Alabama and Boulder business may be a bit stronger, but not so much that I would select them over other schools if they fit you better.
