Prompt: Do we need other people in order to understand ourselves?

Today we share planet Earth with billions of other people. The people around us play a huge role in our lives. We need other people in order to understand ourselves because in many cases others reflect who we are and show us our true self. J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and Moses in the Bible help illustrate this statement.

Harry Potter is an orphan, brought up by his aunt and uncle since the age of one. He studies at Hogwarts and has two very close friends, Ron and Hermione. When Voldemort tries to attack Harry, his friends stood up for Harry and fought to keep him safe, just as Harry fought to protect his friends. Their fiery determination to protect each other is a symbol of their perpetual friendship. And through his friends, Harry learns something more about himself- he has friends, and they have a strong bond, something Voldemort lacks.

Another example is Moses from the bible. As a child, Moses grew up as an Egyptian prince, not knowing he was really an Israelite. He frequently looked down upon the Israelites and enjoyed festivals and parties at the Pharoah's palace all day. But one day, God told Moses the truth and gave him the mission of freeing the Israelites from the Egyptians. When Moses saw how the Israelites were being mistreated, he felt a strong wave of anger and sadness. These people reflected who Moses really was- his true identity. Moses realized that, so with God's help, he fought the Pharoah to the very end, until he let his people go. Through the other Israelites, Moses understood more about himself and his true identity.

In conclusion, we need other people in order to understand ourselves because in many cases, such as Harry Potter's and Moses', other people reflect who we truly are inside. By understanding more about other people and ourselves, we can hope to live in a more harmonious world.
