Hi everyone this is my first thread here in CC. I would a great deal of help if you guys could help me short list or chance me for the colleges that I will or might apply to.
First about me-

Class 10 - CGPA 9 out of 10
class 11 - 67%

Participated in school level Debates, extempore etc.
Won 3 state level Golf Tournaments

I am planning to pursue chemical engineering. I know my class 11 percentage is very bad, the reason is because in 11 i was really preparing for IITs and NITs(prestigious institutes in India) . But now i really want to attend US universities and i have lost hope for Indian universities.

Colleges I might/will apply to-

Illinois Institute of Technology
Pennsylvania State University--University Park
Ohio State University
Iowa State University
Drexel University
Michigan State University
University of Pittsburgh
Michigan State University
Arizona State University
University of Arizona
The University of Iowa
Michigan technological university
New Jersey Institute of Technology
University of Colorado Boulder
Miami University
University of Tulsa

I will be applying for financial aid and also if you all could list some more safeties for me it would be a great deal of help.

Would really appreciate if you guys could help me. Thanks in advance!!!

University of iowa is easy to get into, but the programs there are really great.

Wow you really dropped the ball junior year. None of these are too hard to get in your extracurricular activities should help make up for it you have ever a decent chance at everything

thank you @katlover23 and @nekogami

what about Penn state?? I really want to get into penn state and btw I am from India.

Are you an international student? Most colleges don’t offer much, if any, financial aid for internationals.

I will be applying for financial aid and also if you all could list some more safeties for me it would be a great deal of help.*

???

You’re an int’l?

If so, take off those OOS publics. they don’t give need based aid to int’ls. You might want to find out if some give merit scholarships, but they may only be for small amounts…certainly not full rides or even close to that.

Are you going to retest? If you can get your M+CR to 1400+, your chances for merit will increase.

How much will your parents pay?

We can’t name any safeties w/o knowing how much your family will pay.

Take all of these off your list unless you’re certain to get large merit (not likely) and your family will pay the rest. None of these give int’ls need based aid. There may be more on your list that also won’t give you much/any aid.

Pennsylvania State University–University Park
Ohio State University
Iowa State University
Michigan State University
University of Pittsburgh
Michigan State University
Arizona State University
University of Arizona
The University of Iowa
University of Colorado Boulder

@Erin’s Dad yes i am an international student
@mom2collegekids my parents will be able to pay between $20,000 to $30,000

Your junior year GPA is a problem.

You won’t likely get any merit from the schools that give merit to int’ls because your GPA will be too low because of those junior year grades.

Your GPA will also be a problem at the schools that give need based aid to int’ls. they strongly consider junior year grades…the most.

What is your cum GPA?

Get a firm number from your parents. There’s a big difference between those two amounts. If they’ll pay 30k, you might be able to afford UMinn…not sure…you’d have to add in int’l travel costs and insurance. You’d have to pay all costs.

My cummulative percentage(since our does not grade) will be 78.6% (including my 12th half yearly) and without the half yearly it would be 76.5.
@mom2collegekids i really appreciate the advices you are giving me. Could you list some colleges that accept a maximum no. of OOS students.

Look into other [Association of Independent Technological Universities: AITU](http://theaitu.org) schools besides the two on your list, Illinois Institute of Technology and Drexel University. Smaller private schools will likely be a bit more generous with merit aid (although as pointed out above, your grade 11 marks are a bit weak).

Out of State is irrelevant for an international applicant, all universities will look for maximum tuition dollars from you and you don’t have access to federal funding for need-based aid.

I would say you have a decent chance to be admitted to Illinois Tech but I can’t say about the amount of merit aid that we might offer.

thank you xraymancs

I’m not sure what you’re asking. There’s a big difference between accepting int’l students and giving them merit scholarships. There are a number of schools that will accept you. The Arizona schools will accept you, but getting any money from them is unlikely.

Alabama would accept you, but your GPA is too low for merit. That’s sad because your test scores would have gotten you a full tuition scholarship for ChemE.

the big problem is your GPA. It’s below a B average.

Your junior year GPA is a D average I think.

Your M+CR is a 1390, which is good, but below some school’s thresholds for merit.

Look at UA-Huntsville. The costs may be affordable. They might give you some small award for your 1390.

Also look at Miss State.

I know it’s frustrating that your junior year GPA may mess things up.

thank you mom2collegekids

bump 10 char. More advices anybody!!!

@mom2collegekids i am not worried about the financial aid, i am just worried if i would get in or not

@Mom2collegekids

Wait , consider the OP is Indian , Indian junior year percentages are acutally low because the school makes paper very hard to prepare for national exams in India in Grade 12

OP what was your class rank?

if you are asking me then my rank is 18/97
