PLEASE HELP ME: UF vs WM

So I have been accepted to some good school schools, but my decision has come down to the University of Florida and The College of William and Mary (Other good schools have offered no FA).

I just don't know what to do.

I want to double major in Finance and Communications, and later want to become an investment banker. I do have some connections in NYC, but from a school standpoint, where would I be better off from an employment perspective.

Also, I love to party, and I've visited UF numerous times and have many friends there. I really love it, but I think I could thrive socially in Williamsburg as well, especially because of the fraternity scene. I am visiting William and Mary next week, however.

Please comment on any aspect of the schools, and just help me make a decision, I literally have no clue what to do.
Anything is appreciated!!!

For business and communication I think W&M is a better school. You can have parties in WM as well, don’t know the intensity of it.

Why do you say that? (about business and comm)

W&M is a great school, but it’s not very strong in business and less so in communications. UF has one of the top communications programs in the country (the College of Journalism and Communications), and it has a stronger business school (especially in Finance and Marketing).

I would recommend reviewing the degrees/programs available and the courses offered at both schools.

Good Luck!.

^ Why I do say it’s great to be a Florida Gator. Haha!
Gator88, your avatar makes me smile. :)

<a href=“Bloomberg - Are you a robot?”>Bloomberg - Are you a robot?;

in this ranking W&M is 10 positions higher than UF in business. I did not pay for the USNEWS ranking reports because I don’t have to. Anyway, even if UF has slight edge in USNEWS you just cannot say UF is superior in anyway.

Sure I can! I can sprout nonsense with the best of them! Putting aside US News rankings vs. BusinessWeek rankings; W&M only offers a BS in business (at the undergraduate level). They follow an “Individual Program of Study (IPS)”, that allows you “freedom to design your own program”.

At UF, they offer the following BS/BA degrees; Accounting, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Marketing and Business. UF also offers minors in business administration, Information Systems, Real Estate, Retailing and Entrepreneurship.

Now, W&M’s IPS program may be the right program for DoctaDoolittle. However, they really should compare what courses are available (at both schools). The flexibility of W&M’s IPS program doesn’t do you any good, if the classes you want are not available. UF has a degree in Finance, while W&M does not.

At W&M, In addition to the core curriculum, students majoring in finance complete 12 credits in the discipline.

Required Courses (3 credits each)
BUAD 324 Money & Debt Markets
BUAD 325 Equity Markets & Portfolio Management
BUAD 423 Corporate Financial Strategy

Electives (3 credits each, choose one)
BUAD 417 International Finance
BUAD 419 Valuation
BUAD 421 Student Managed Investment Fund
BUAD 492 Special Topics: Financial History
BUAD 492 Special Topics: Applied Financial Concepts

http://mason.wm.edu/programs/undergraduate/academic/finance/index.php</a></p>

At UF, other than the standard classes, it requires the following Finance Classes (4 credits each, a total of 20 credits in finance is required in the discipline):

Required Courses (4 credits each)
FIN 3403 Business Finance
FIN 4243 Debt and Money Markets
FIN 4504 Equity and Capital Markets
FIN 4414 Financial Management

Electives (at least 1 course, 4 credits is required)

A samply of some course available:
FIN 2951 Special Projects
FIN 4403 Honors Finance
FIN 4433 Venture Finance and Private Equity
FIN 4453 Financial Modeling
FIN 4905 Independent Research
FIN 4934 Special Topics
FIN 4941 Internship in Finance
FIN 4956 International Studies in Finance
FIN 4970 Honors Thesis (required for magna cum laude or summa cum laude designation)

<a href=“Finance < University of Florida”>https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/business/majors/finance.aspx</a></p>

Note: Both schools require 120 credits to complete the degree.

Also, UF has an excellent College of Journalism and Communications, which the poster has also has shown interest. W&M doesn’t offer a Communications degree/program.

Of course the poster can succeed at either school. However, they will not be able to double major in Finance and Communications at W&M.

William & Mary’s business school is one of the best in the country. The business school is focused around the idea that the classes you take determine your major so you can become well versed in all aspects of business. Therefore, you can major in finance at WM. In fact, many people do major in finance at the college. William and Mary also has very strong connections to wall street and the financial sector (a current alum is head of securities and exchanges), and many others work in “the trenches” of wall wall street. If majoring in communications is super important to you, than you should go to UF because you cannot make a communications major at the college. However, you should look at both schools to see which you feel is a better fit for you.
