Hi, I’m a rising junior. I’d appreciate it if you guys can help me with my course seleciton.

This is what’s set so far:
-English HL
-Math HL
-Econ HL

Not set so far:
-Chinese SL/HL?
-[Chem SL and Psych SL]
or
-[Physics SL and History SL]

I took what’s equivalent of Chinese SL Year 1 in my sophomore year. I’m hesitant to take Year 2 in my junior year because I don’t feel quite ready for the upcoming exam. Taking SL Year 1 in my junior year (which is kind of repeating) might look bad because I got a 5 on my AP Chinese test in my freshman year already. Taking HL level might be too hard. I know it really depends on my skills but I’d like some advice.

Due to schedule conflict, I have to choose between the two aforementioned options. Choosing the former (psych and chem) would allow me to get a better gradesand a chance to take SAT II Chem which I’ve heard is easier than Physics. However, the latter (history and psych) constists of harder but more “established” subjects, if you know what I mean. It will be harder for me to get a better grade with the second option, but I’m guessing it will be looked upon more favorably by colleges since they want students who challenge themselves. Is this correct or do colleges not really care about IB subjects? Besides, I think History would be more “helpful” in life…

I’d like to have 4 HL, by the way. And I think I’m going to pursue econ/business route. Can you guys help me come up with the best combination?

Cheers

If you'd like to take 4 HLs, then it looks like you're going to have to take Chinese HL. All the other options you listed are SLs. I see no reason why you shouldn't advance in your study of Chinese. I'm guessing that you're a somewhat native speaker, and it shouldn't be too hard for you to pick up some more of the language.

As for your second problem, I would say go with Chem SL and Psych SL. It is more important for you to have Chemistry in high school than Physics. If you have time left during your senior year, go ahead and take Physics then. Since your courseload is otherwise demanding, it's fine if you take the courses where you can get better grades. You'll appreciate the GPA boost.

Have you had a history course already in high school? If not, that could change the situation.

Thanks. Could you please explain why it is more important to have Chem in high school than Physics?

well i see it like this, chem is the basic science, you need it for both biological sciences and engineering so yes it's good to have, the larger selection is between bio and physics.

are u native chinese? cuz im an native and chinese HL is REALLY hard, and i suggest Chem SL and Psych SL, this is from an IB DIPLOMA student's perspective, feel free to ask me.

Thank you, JBVirtuoso, juliushark and Winston.C. I should either take the Year 2 of Chinese SL in my junior year or take SL from the beginning.

I think it'll end up taking:
Eng HL
Math HL
Econ HL
Psych HL
Chinese SL
Chem SL

Will this be more manageable than taking History and Physics? Does this schedule still look like I'm challenging myself?

something to say is that eng IBA HL and math hl requires a lot of work!!and yes it will be more manageable than history, personally i regret taking history, unless u r a born reader!..

uhhhh don't you need 3 SL to get the diploma? 4 HLs is tough work, you sure you wanna do that?

i'm sure about takin 4 hls because my school is pretty dang competitive. hopefully i'll survive.
