Please Help Me with My College List

Hi, I have a basic list of colleges I am researching, but I feel like I am missing some schools. I want a college with a good business program (accounting) along with equal liberal arts program (mainly history and english, but I am interested in a liberal arts education). Schools I am researching right now:

UPenn
Georgetown
Babson College
Villanova
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
University of Virginia
Penn State
NYU
Hofstra
SUNY Binghampton
Boston College

I an within the top 10% of my class and am looking for schools on the east coast (near cities), but if the program is great distance is not an issue. i am also looking for universities that allow me to double major across colleges since I have varying interests. Thank you.

How much can your family afford? For instance NYU costs $60K/year and gives out very little FA. What is your home state? Penn State does not give out FA to OOS students.

Penn State’s financial aid is rather poor even for in-state students. UNC-CH and UVA are significantly better, and are the two public universities that claim to meet need for out-of-state students.

Your cost constraints, financial aid situation, and state of residency are important factors in making your application list.

My home state is New York, and finances are not really an issue. My parents have offered to pay for school, but I don’t want to put that burden on them unless the school is worth it. I do have financial safties: Hofstra and CUNY Baruch (Macauley Honors students don’t have to pay), but I am willing to take out loans if required.

Have they told you how much they are able and willing to contribute? Sometimes parents promise to pay for college without knowing how much that can be.

Remember that you can only borrow a limited amount on your own ($5,500 for the first year). It appears that many colleges assume that you can up to $3,000 per year in work earnings. So your parents’ contribution plus $8,500 is probably the outside limit on what you can afford (and you and your parents would have somewhat more financial breathing space if the net price were lower than that).

I have run the total cost of college and they said it was okay as long as that was the option I liked the most. However, my mother has been pushing me towards Hofstra because we expect a large merit aid package as well as my father since he wants me close to home. I have no problem going to Hofstra if it comes down to it, but I feel I need grow up an become more independent which will not happen 5 minutes from home.

You can look on these sites for some top accounting programs:

[Top Undergraduate Business Schools by Specialty - Businessweek](<a href=“Bloomberg - Are you a robot?”>Bloomberg - Are you a robot?)

[Accounting | Rankings | US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/business-accounting)

You can take History and English classes for any gen ed type slots. Majoring in Accounting and History/English may be hard because they will likely be taught in different colleges within the University.

U. Richmond has a highly ranked undergrad business school within a well-regarded LAC.

Do you have any test scores yet? (PSAT, SAT or ACT?)

I would probably take off Babson if you want to major across colleges as the school’s primary focus is business. I’d look into Fordham as well – depending on your stats you may qualify for merit aid.

you should consider FA because a lot of these schools do not give FA aid and if you are OOS then you won’t get anything? Also what do you want to study? social life? clubs, etc?

Erin’s Dad: Thank you for the links!

Sacchi: Thanks for the tip! I head University of Richmond was good for business, but I didn’t know it was within a well-regarded LAC. Do you know if the school allows students to major across colleges. I have a 36 on the ACT and 800s on the Bio, World History, and US History subject tests.

Beautifulchick95: I know that I will not qualify for need bases financial aid, so that is not really a factor. I want to major in accounting along with history and possiblely English. I would like a school that offers a strong business program in addition to strong liberal arts core. I want to be near a city and clubs don’t matter as long as the ones offered interest me.

^ i would say Upenn and georgetown are the best fit

Are there any school similar to Upenn and georgetown that are less selective? I like both schools, but I know that they are difficult schools to be gain acceptance.

I second Fordham as a good option. It is a stronger school than Hofstra and you will likely get merit aid with those ACT scores. And Fordham has non-binding early action so you will get an admissions decision by the end of December if you apply early enough.

I was thinking Fordam, but a lot of kids from school go there and I wanted a bit of a clean slate in college. However, if it gives good merit aid I will look into it. Thank you!

BC i s a good option too but i do not know that much about the school

Sorry, I don’t know the specific policies for double majoring at U. Richmond. It has an absolutely beautiful campus, and has good merit aid, which your high test scores make you a good candidate for.
