I'm 23-year old international transfer student. I'm right now holding a 3-year diploma in computer engineering from Polytechnic (Singapore) and i would like to transfer to US university to get a Bachelor in Computer Science.

But i do not want to carry on another full 4 year to get a degree. I would like to get my previous credits transferred and i expect 3 years to go.

I do not want to choose the schools anyhow. I do not want to waste my time & money for a worthless degree. I prefer reputed & quality schools.

I have two options to choose.
option 1) Directly go to san jose state university
OR
option 2) Go to Cuesta college and transfer to CalPoly SLO.

Right now i feel like in the middle of nowhere. I'm totally lost. I personally prefer option2, but i'm afraid i could not get many credit exempted. Moreover, is it 100% sure to get into CalPoly right after Cuesta College? Would my 2-year working experience in the related fields be helpful?

Tell me which one would be better option to choose and what i'm supposed to do?

I have no one to ask for the advice. PLEASE someone here help me!! i need advice badly.

I have a foreign academic credentials myself. I always thought that i’m not gonna be able to transfer all the courseworks i completed until a counselor suggested a third party credentials evaluator like WES World Education Services - International Education Intelligence or any foreign credentials evaluator who are members of NACES NACES® Members

A lot of the community colleges, state universities and independent colleges and universities use this service because many of their admissions and academic staff are not equiped to deal with the complexities of other nations educational system. You need to request a comprehensive course by course evaluation. Although theirs is only an advisory opinion, the final acceptance of the credit rest on the colleges that you’ll apply. In my case, i actually got so much credit that i started as a senior. I also got the maximum money from stafford as a senior. Believe me, i’d rather start as a senior than a freshman. Saved me a lot of money and a lot of hard work. College ain’t easy my friend. I’m also able to get a part time job.

Here’s the link for WES [World Education Services - International Education Intelligence](http://www.wes.org)

So you suggest me to go where i could get the most credit transferred regardless of other aspects?

What other aspect? You want all the credit you want right? I’ve given you all the answer. If you wanna go to San Jose State or Cal Poly, be prepared to shell out a lot of your own money. They are state schools so you can forget about getting a generous financial aid. So get a comprehensive course by course evaluation of your foreign transcript by WES. You can save yourself a lot of headache and money if your going the state school route. Get all the transfer credit you believe you deserve.

Yup! thanks for the advice, but unfortunately, i do not really have much time to go through the evaluation agency right now.

And SJSU said they have foreign credit evaluator and never ask me to go through the third party.
Meanwhile, I have got admitted into San Jose State University and they granted me 20 credit exempted for the admission and told me that i could get more credits transferred when i start the class and talk to the course adviser. After doing so, to what extent i could get more credits transferred and how the ultimate GPA is going to be calculated? Are all the transferred units are printed together with the units taken in UNI on the final transcript?

So going to Cuesta College and transfer to Calpoly would be faster and cheaper route as i think CC would give me more credit transferred?

I went through the same with California State University. In fact, they wont accept any transfer credit. They advised me to go back to the local community college and be IGETC certified link [CSUMentor - Plan for College - Transfer Students - Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)

If i want to get credit for all the courses i’ve taken, the professors from the different dapartment will make the final determination by comparing the two courses side by side. They asked me to provide syllabus, reading materials, research papers, book tittles etc. California State will make it difficult for you to transfer credit. Majority of their transfers are from the community colleges So yah, if you have plenty of time and money, going back to community college and starting as a freshman is the only viable option. If you want to transfer credit, start collecting all the materials to support your request for transfer. Going the private university route is more straight forward.

Sorry! my budget is very limited. I cant afford to go private university.
I have to take loan from the bank.

what if i transfer my credits to CC and clear all the GE there and later transfer to CalPoly? can i just do at most 1 year at CC?
I think it’s cheaper and faster route. do you think so?

i’m not sure how the GPA is going to be calculated?
Let’s say… if my previous college GPA is 3.5 and my transferable credit would be 3.4
and i did pretty well on CC …say 3.9
So how the GAP would be? all the credits i have at previous college will be printed together with the ones taken at CC on the final transcript or only transferred credits?

Thanks for helping me.
