this is a stupid question, but how do i go about doing community service? how do i ensure i get credit for doing it if i don't join a club. like...if i write that i volunteered 10 hours a week on my application, how do they know that i'm not lying. are there papers at my school that i need to fill out? please help me b/c for some reason nobody that i know knows.

Well, I guess some would argue that despite your motivations, your volunteering would be much appreciated.

I myself believe there should be altruism at the heart of what motivates a person to give their time.

The reward is in the work, not the recognition. There are many causes that could use you, find one that you care about and it may mean something to you someday.

Red Cross
YMCA

Big Brothers/Big Sisters (boys are in desperate need of help nowadays)

Homeless shelters

Coaching

Retirement homes

Buy a homeless person a meal

Find an older person in your neighborhood and offer to clean their yard or read to them

There are a myriad of opportunities awaiting those willing to give a portion of their time..and it need not be a lot of time.

I second that, exilio!

okay...i know what i want to do as volunteer work, but i don't know how to make it count...don't act all high and mighty b/c you don't know what i do and i do help others just to help out. ANYWAYS... i want to get into a good college like the rest of you guys and i believe that the best way to really help the world our is to get educated and help find solutions rather than appease problems. i wasn't asking for a lecture. you are making an assumption that i don't care about the volunteering that i do just because i want credit and get nothing out of it just because i want credit for it..then i am guessing that any work that you do is not written on your college app.... i believe that you do appreciate altruism, but give me a break. nobody is completely selfless. if anyone else would like to help me out i thank you in advance.

Go to MS Excel and make out your own volunteer service sheet. On the sheet, put at the top "Organization," "Position (ie: what you helped out in)," "Hours worked," and then "Signature of club sponser/advisor". Then just print it out and take with you to every thing you do, and have to organization owner or whover is responsible for the club sign under "signature." Then you have proof.

bluealien is right....
I volunteer constantly and I take that sheet to every place I volunteer at. It makes things a heck of a lot easier! ( I volunteer because I like to, and being able to add them to your list of EC's is a second bonus.)

I'd make a copy of your list and keep it in a safe spot in case you lose the original.

go to your local republican headquaters and they'll be happy to put you to work

Your concern was how to get credit for the deed, not how to do the deed itself. So don't get defensive about it.

Your posting portrays you as someone that is interested in credit first, deed second, as a by-product of what it can do for your app.

Of course I wrote down what I have done on my app. But I didn't write everything, and I volunteered long before I considered going to college. This doesn't make me better, or morally superior than anyone.

You asked for help and I supplied it in the best way I knew how...do with it what you will.
