bump........

anyone have any ideas??

I think some of your matches are reaches. If you're talking about being from a Scarsdale or Chappaqua league school with heavy apps to top schools, much is expected of you. Your scores are not great, considering, for ivies.

Best bet? Interest a tennis coach.

ya i know.. cornell, northwestern, wash u are also reaches. my bad. i was kinda looking at what my guidance counselor told me and got confused.

my real loves are duke and uvaout of state though. do i have any chance for those

I don't know much about UVA, but Duke is a reach. They get a huge number of apps from suburban NY schools and the competition is fierce.

When I look at stats like yours, what I see is someone who can get into a heck of a lot of really great colleges. I think there is such a problem with so many smart kids falling in love with the same 15 colleges.

If I were your mom, I'd put you in the car and show you Middlebury, Colby, Bowdoin, Vandy, Emory, CMC, Rice and a bunch of other great school which you could fall in love with. If fate is on your side and an ivy or Duke gives you the nod, great. Otherwise, you'll be very happy at another great college.

what is CMC? i really don't want to go to a school in vermont or maine-- trust me my parents have pushed it but i just really don't want it. thank you though for ur advice. i feel as if vanderbilt is just as tough to get into as those others?

so really what i need to do is raise my SAT II scores- lovely. i hate SAT 2s i suck at them lol.

Vandy is easier than most of your other reach matches, especially for a New Yorker. CMc is Claremont in sunnt Southern CA, a beautiful school. Also in the consortium are Scripps which would be a safe match for you and Pitzer, all worth looking at.

What do you want in a school? Dartmouth, Williams, Cornell, Colgate suggested you disn't mind frigid winters.

I don't. I guess its kinda just this weird thing for me. My family has a condo in VT and I just can't stand driving there through VT- the isolated feeling just gives me this freaked out feeling. I know its weird and your probably like ok why does this matter. BUt I have a list of 20 schools right now that I would most likely be happy going to- including at least 5 safeties. California is also just too far for me.

Some schools will take just ACT (which will be great for you!), and some require SAT IIs -- take 1 of the sciences, then your top 3 can be Math Ic, World, and Bio/Chem)

Reaches- Duke, UVA, Georgetown, Dartmouth, Williams, Wash U, Cornell, Northwestern
Matches- Bucknell, BC, Colgate, Hamilton, U of Mich
Safety- Lehigh, U of Rochester, Union, U of Richmond

does applying duke ED give me a much better chance?

You have said more about what you don't want than what you do. Fair enough, you don't like rural NE and CA is too far. You only have a couple of city schools, there's lots of rural (Cornell feels a lot like VT) and just nothing that tells us what you really want other than a name.

There's lots of debate between those who believe ED helps at top schools and those who don't. I don't think it helps. In my book the higher acceptance rate is just a factor of so many being recruited athletes, legacies, development candidates and increasingly, URMs. For the mainstream candidate I don't see how it helps.

I am willing to go upstate NY bc i live in NY and my parents would love if i was driving distance. however i have not yet seen cornell so i may not like it. what are URMs?

this is what i would like... i would like a school with lots of athletics and school spirit. i really am not sure what size i would like-- i would like small classes but i want the choices of majors as in a big school. I want a work hard, play hard atmosphere. I am considering a major in the field of medicine and health (not necessarily pre-med though).

Hello, my oldest will be heading off to college next year too. One thing we've realized is that driving distance may not be the best test of how "far" from home you are. My son's first choice is Stanford, a 7 hour drive or 2 hour door to door commute with an airline that costs less than the gas for the trip. 2nd choice is Columbia, 3000 miles away but 6 and one half hours door to door commute, again, less time than the in state drive.

Try to keep an open mind and focus on what you want. You need to look at enough schools to help you decide if you feel more comfortable with 2,000 undergrads or 20,000. If Vermont gives you the creeps, so will most rural areas. A lesser known school might actually be the best school for what you're interested in. The possibilities are endless.

If you and your parent's have time this summer, looking at colleges will be a good investment. Good luck!

URMs are minorities.

Thank you for all your help! :)
