My daughter does not take Biology before, she is currently in 10th grade, she has some difficulties in AP Biology so far, she does not understand what her teacher teaches in class, she self-studied Chapter 1, 2, 3 in the text book(Campbell), it helps but it is still not enough. Her teacher teaches very fast in these 3 chapters , most of her classmates know the fundamental knowledge of Biology from Honor Bio in 9th grade, so they are fine. She failed on the first test in class.
What else she must do by herself to keep up with class? What books she should read to improve her knowledge about Biology? She cannot get any helps except studying by herself on the lacking knowlege for the Pre AP Bio.
What is the good book for her situation? Right now our main concern is how can she can keep up with class? I do not ask about the long run, she does not want her GPA drops down, so far she gets 4.0 un-weighted.
Please help. Thank you very much.

The Campbells book can be really hard to understand. See if her class has access to the online stuff related to the book, it is SOOOO helpful! I took AP Bio after taking a seven week biology course in the summer (my only exposure to bio before AP, and it was geared towards kids who failed it in school so it didn’t help really at all) so I’ve been in that situation before. Just READ READ READ! IF I could go back and do it over, I would READ!! It’s boring at first but just work through it! The online stuff has a lot more visual stuff to help. Barrons Review Books are good and so are Princeton Review.

Another thing that helped me out IMMENSLY was Bozeman Biology videos! They were a life saver!

I don’t know if her tests are the same, but my teacher got the questions from the book and they are for college students. they are REALLY hard and a lot of stuff went right over my head. The AP Test was soooo much easier than the in class tests were.

Good Luck!

Khan Academy on Youtube is also helpful, in addition to Bozeman Biology. Also, CliffsAP is the best review book for AP Bio, so reading the chapter from their before a text could help. Look up some practice MC too on the Internet. There’s a ton. Bonne chance!

i dont recommend it entirely for learning, but campbell does release a question bank that has about 100 practice questions per chapter that you can purchase. If i still have them I can send them to you. I dont know if the teacher uses these questions to design the test but its still good practice.

Thank you all.
The Youtube link is excellent. We love it.
Please tell me what is practice MC, I will buy Barron and APCliff as you recommend today. Does Student Study Guide for Campbell Reece Biology help?

I have that campbell book for my ap bio class. I found that it’s best to read it multiple times. Reading the chapter once will not help you. You need to read it 3-4 times over several days to real get it. When you get to second semester studying for the exam, thats when you break out the ap test guides (cliffs, or whatever).

I’m a sophomore and I’m taking AP Biology and Honors Chem. I use the campbell book as well; when I read a section in the book, I stop, and I read the simplified version that coursenotes.org gives you. It really helps!
Also, I use an additional book (Mader Biology) for more practice problems and a different view of the diagrams.
