PLEASE HELP! Please!! SCAD or other school???????????????

so the question is; should I go to SCAD for illustration major (or graphic major) and graduate there,

or should I go to Cal state Long Beach for 2years (or3) and transfer to SAIC or RISD, or the other major art school???

First, I’m a F-2 visa holder, and gonna be an international student. I was accepted to SAIC, MICA, SVA, Ringling (Computer Animation), Cal state Long Beach, SCAD, Otis…etc. Didn’t apply to RISD or Art center because I thought they won’t give any scholarships (but all my friends-who are in the equal level as I’m in got in to those schools). Not being arrogant, but saying that I got the art background.

I got scholarships from SAIC, MICA, Otis, SCAD but I got the most money from SCAD (14500 per year- gonna do the scholarship appeal) so I’m considering SCAD now. First I thought of going CSU Long Beach, but after talking with my teacher I found out that if I transfer from CSULB to the other art school I can’t really use my credit from the CSULB. maybe art history credit but not the other studio credit. That means I have to take all the foundation classes in the school that I’m gonna transfer (SAIC or RISD), and that’s no use for me cause I didn’t go to those schools at the first place b/c of the expensive tuition.

But I’ve heard a lots of bad things about SCAD… I read the most student reviews on online and I am so confused. I can see that Savannah has the most Crime rate and whatever (and it’s okay I won’t go out during night) but low employment? :frowning: that’s a big minus for me… also they are not credited by NASAD?? I don’t really know what that means- but it doesn’t sound good! Also does that mean that I will have some classes that won’t get me the credit when I transfer from SCAD to another college?

So…my options are,

go to SCAD for illustration major (or graphic major) and graduate there

go to Cal state Long Beach for 2years (or3) and transfer to SAIC or RISD, or the other major art school?

Or go to SCAD for 2 years and transfer from there.

I really really want to get a job when I graduate, of course it’s hard for the international student like me to get a job, but I will do my best. The deadline for the enrollment fee and whatnot is comming and I have HAVE to decide by at least mid-May.

Please, all the artists!! Help me!!!

If finances are a concern, look not at what each school offered you in terms of financial aid. Instead, look at how much, after aid, you have to pay them - how much in loans do you need to take out for each school. That should be a factor in your decision.

For example, if you got $15,000 per year in scholarships from school X, and they cost $35,000 per year to attend, you’d need to take out loans for $20,000 per year. If school Y offered you no scholarships, but only costs $10,000 per year, school Y is actually the better deal.

SCAD isn’t a bad art school. I’d rank it in the top 150 or so art schools in the US (in my list, I also am including universities with good art programs like Syracuse.) However, I’d actually rank Cal State Long Beach higher than SCAD. By quite a lot, actually. So if you are trying to choose between SCAD and Cal State LB, you may want to give a second look to Long Beach. It’s got quite the respectable art program.

It is often the case that you can get better financial aid from a broad university than you can from a pure art school, so if you do decide to transfer, and if financial aid is an issue for you, consider 1) applying to at least some broad unis that have great art schools in them, and 2) make sure at least some of them have a history of offering financial aid to international students. For example, Arizona State U, and U Arizona, could be good choices for you - strong art programs, and they have a history of offering aid to international students.

It is very unlikely that you will be able to get a job in design in the US once you graduate, if you don’t hold a green card, if you major in most art fields. Your best bet, if working in the US is your goal, is to major in something in relatively high demand - maybe computer animation, interactive media, digital media, something of that sort - a field where the US does tend to have to “import” employees. Or major in illustration or graphic design, but also gain significant computer skills related to in-demand fields, so you can translate your illustration major into work for a digital media company, for example.

Do an internship or two while you study, so that you build a portfolio and make connections in the industry. This will set you up with the best possible chance to find a job in the US when you graduate.

I would opt for Long Beach State. Also, other programs will take some of your coursework at least, I don’t know why anyone would tell you different.

Please help someone. I need to choose the best out of the above and proceed with admission.

Design Intelligence ranks SCAD as having some of the top, and top 10 best, programs in the country, as well as the best professors in the country.

National accreditation is useless. Regional accreditation is the hardest to achieve, and SCAD has SACS accreditation, which is the most prestigious in the South.

I have lived in Savannah for 5 years, and can tell you first-hand that Savannah is an extraordinarily safe place to live. Downtown, where the school is, is as safe as the Vatican.

Savannah’s problem with crime was in the 70’s and 80’s, but Charleston and Hilton Head still won’t let you forget it. ;)
