I will be receiving my 2nd quarter grades next week and i may end up with a B+ in my Latin 2 class. however, all my other 5 AP/IB classes will most likely be A's. i have been getting straight A's since 10th grade.

i've applied to mainly top 25 schools along with some that are my safetys...
but for mainly the Ivies, stanford, etc. how much would one B+ affect my admissions decision?

i'm truely suprised, most people who post this kinda thread are new members with 3 or 4 post counts. Have you not been surfing CC? have you noticed there's been 5 million these kind of posts already??? 155 post counts and you still did this, not acceptable.

You think that's bad? Math has always been my strongest subject. I broke 700 on the SAT math section. I even got my school's Math award in 10th grade. Yet, I boast a mere C average in Calc BC, which is one of the lower averages in the class. For some reason, I just can't follow Calc. It confuses me greatly and it is very frustrating because I am used to being one of the best students in all of my other Math classes.

A B+ will not kill you. You have straight A's in all of your other classes, so I doubt a B is going to kill your transcript that badly. In my case, I have a C in a subject that I'm supposed to be good at based on my past academic record. I just can't get Calc though. It is so different than all other math.

hepster, my d HATE calc, I mean with a passion, she is enjoying Stats right now though...

and I must say, many HS can't teach calc....I see more complaints about bad calc grades than any other class...it can't be because smart kids get dumb...it just may not be taught well

"and I must say, many HS can't teach calc....I see more complaints about bad calc grades than any other class...it can't be because smart kids get dumb...it just may not be taught well"

This is very true. My school seems to have this philosophy that the best teachers are the ones who've been teaching the longest. I'm in the "Scholars Program" at my school, which is for the smart kids or so-called smart kids. Most of our teachers are the most tenured teachers at my school. However, this doesn't mean they're good. My Calc BC teacher has been teaching for 43 YEARS. Yet, he can't teach to save his life. I sit in his class everyday and literally stare at the board trying to ingest all of the integrals and derivatives. When myself or another student asks him a question, he just explains the whole thing in Calc talk. The whole reason I'm asking the question is because I don't understand Calc or Calc talk. I know Calc isn't easy to simplify, but I think he could make more of an effort than he does. I just hope that colleges will realize that I have solid grades in other math classes and a good SAT math score.

Believe me citygirlsmom, your D isn't alone.

i completely agree. my BC Calc teacher can't teach to SAVE HIS LIFE. he messes up all the time, doesn't know what the heck he is doing, we correct HIS mistakes, AND he never makes anything simpler. we never take notes, always just problems that he doesn't even explain the right way.

and he's been teaching for a while...they gave the class to him because it's the hardest, he's the most "experienced" and he was the only one who was willing to teach it.

^^ On the contrary, my calc BC teacher is amazing! Although she is rather strict and can be pretty mean sometimes...I can understand her really well. I do have a B, but over 70% of the class has A's...and really do deserve them (not an easy class at all). She's British too...extra fun!

The AB teacher at my school is TERRIBLE though, so I am glad I took BC!

Lol, at my school calc BC is combined w/ calc AB. BC is essentially self-study. You sit in the corner with the textbook and try to firgure that stuff out by yourself. If you have a question, the teacher will then try to teach it...but all she does is make it more confusing. =(

I had the AB teacher at my school last year for Pre-calc. She is very smart, but just has trouble teaching what she knows. She is a nice person though, just not a great teacher. So I figured, maybe I'll give BC a shot since it has a guy who has been teaching it for over 40 years. What a mistake! Taking that class was perhaps the worst decision I've made in my academic career. Not only does my teacher not teach, he also holds grudges against his "not so bright" students. It's nothing blatant. He never says anything, but I can tell from his demeanor that he isn't too fond of me.

^^ I kind of have the same thing...except she doesn't necessarily 'hate' me, but she singles me out whenever it is a hard less. "Do you understand??? Are you getting this??" It's in front of the whole class (40 kids) too, and therefore I end up feeling really dumb. But, I think it is cause she can see that I work harder than any of the other kids in the class, and am disappointed often because I am not naturally inclined towards math (funny because my mom has a Bachelor's in math, and my dad is an electrical engineer...beautiful)

Don't you hate that?? You work your butt off, and everyone else can pull off A's with little effort. Obviously, some of those who get A's do work hard, but some really don't.

My BC class has 15 kids. That's the largest class that ever chose to take it. Most of the kids either go to AP AB Calc or regular Calculus. One year, BC Calc had a mere 5 kids. Now I know why.

"Don't you hate that?? You work your butt off, and everyone else can pull off A's with little effort."

Tell me about it. Kids goof off all the time in the class, yet they pull of better grades than me. The dumb kids who goof off cheat off of the smart kids who goof off. So not all of the people beating me are doing it because they are smarter. I feel like saying something at times, but I realize that it isn't worth it because they'll probably find out that I gave them up, since I have always opposed cheating.

"funny because my mom has a Bachelor's in math, and my dad is an electrical engineer"

Al least you have someone to turn to for help with math. My father is a medical guru, but couldn't help me with my Math homework once I reached high school. My mother is an avid reader and would probably do really well on the CR section of the SAT. Unfortunately, neither knows a thing about Calc. I have no idea where I got my Math ability from. According to my father, his father was a Math wiz, so maybe that's why I got it from. All I know is that this "ability" of mine doesn't apply to Calc.

wow...5?? There are 2 BC classes...so in total theres around 75 taking it. A lot do copy off one another in terms of homework...not so much on tests.

I hate going to my parents for help, because they learned it a completely different way, or will get mad at me when I don't understand the concept or what they are trying to tell me right away. It gets pretty frustraing. At least I have another 74 kids to turn to...minus 20 or so who really don't do anything in the class.
