My son applied to Berkeley, UCI, UCLA, and UCSD and was rejected from all of them. When he submitted his application, he received this message.

Congratulations! According to UC calculations, you rank in the top 9 percent of students from your high school. If you also meet the minimum admissions requirements, we will make every effort to offer you admission to at least one UC campus.

Does this mean he was guaranteed admission at any UC campus? Do we wait for them to contact us first or how does it work? Trying to keep this message as simple as possible. Please help!

I’m not 100% sure how they notify or anything, but I know when it’s getting in based on eligibility requirements, which is the 9% message, it isn’t into the top UC’s it would most likely be Riverside or Merced, you should contact the UC’s for more information. And even though he won’t get into the more elite UC’s all of them are great schools and are very impressive on applications for jobs and grad schools

I am also not 100% sure how it works but I can tell you as a fact that it will not be his choice. I’ve heard that it is Merced, Riverside, and if he get’s lucky maybe Santa Cruz. You should contact your high school counselor and the schools directly though. Make sure to call, not email

Hi Petey85-
In your case…please have your child go to their GC…TOMORROW. They may be able to help.
Others reading this post…When you are identified as ELC…or top 9% of your California HS class…the UC’s will send you a letter like the original poster. You have to apply to the UCs in order to be offered a place in the incoming class. SO…please…PLEASE include one or two UCs that are not so impacted as UCI, UCSD, UCLA, UCB, or UCD. That way, should you not be offered admissions to one of the impacted UCs you can have a UC that not only will offer you admission, but might even offer a fabulous scholarship like the Regent.
This years class (2016) UCs not so impacted…UC Riverside, and Merced.

Our GC told us that D needed to apply to a UC that was accepting ELC students to be guaranteed a spot (these would be Riverside/Merced or possibly Davis depending on major). So we had her apply. The change in the ELC rules has many more students qualifiying, so the admission process is more difficult.

If you are on Spring Break, call the UC’s listed above or in APOL’s message and ask what to do. Be prepared with ELC information, UC application number, stats, etc. I would do this TODAY. If you are not on Spring Break, call the GC TODAY, or have your student go to the office and wait to speak with them.

got this email today…■■■ so embarrassing considering i thought some of these UCs were matches…

“As a University of California campus committed to educating tomorrow’s leaders, we have made an agreement with the UC Office of the President to expand our enrollment to assure qualified students (those who meet UC eligibility but were not offered admission at a sister campus) a place at the University of California. Therefore, I am pleased to offer you a special opportunity to be considered for freshman admission to the Fall 2012 or Spring 2013 semester at UC Merced, with the condition that you meet a prescribed set of criteria.”

applied to UCSC, UCSB, UCI, UCSD, UCD, & UCLA(yea i know this one was a 2% chance)

rejected to UCSC, UCI, UCSD, UCD, & UCLA

uci even sent me emails about the honors program on sept1st 2011 -.-

wait-listed at UCSB (no one got off wait-list last year)

STATS-
SAT-1980
ACT-29
UC GPA- 3.75
and okay ECs with leadership positions
english teacher wanted to keep a copy of my college essay to show her future students so i presume it was OK

When the ELC program was limited to the top 4% Davis was one of the school that generally accepted ELC students. With the 9% and the budget cuts, it seems like that is not happening.

If you visit the UC Statsfinder you can create a custom table with various demographics to see what the admit rate is for different combinations pf UC GPA/SAT, etc

Sorry to hear of not being accepted to these schools. It looks like it just keeps getting tougher every year.

The email means that you probably will be offered admission at either UC Merced or UC Riverside. If there is still interest in a UC, you might want to give these some serious consideration.
