please help SAT test timing

hey guys.. im in dire need of help.. i consider my self to be generally a smart person with a 4.7 gpa but im not trying to brag, the thing is when i took the SAT, i couldnt complete some of the sections and if i did complete like 2 of them, theyd be within 30 seconds left... how can i speed up my time? please help and give me any other important tips.. thanks !!

work faster

great advice.. please refrain from posting on my threads again..

haha. i got a great gpa 4.02 (4.00 is the highest in my school). i find that smart ppl have a difficult time of maintaining time. this is what u r trying to do, according to barron's: worrying ur head that u have to ans. every question, and every question right. dont do that. set a goal. read barrons for advice.

i think it's because high GPA students (in high school at least) are usually people who works hard and long. means they try to do their works(hw or classworks) perfect and teachers usually like that, and do not set a time limit too tight.

and i guess SAT is totally opposite. you need work fast. and it can be less than perfect; you can still get a good score without answering every questions or every questions right.

it was my generalization.

so what do you really need to do is just SET a goal score and practice more. (in fact i really didnt set a goal score, and decided to solve every questions in the verbal section... it result in a poooooooor score and horrible percentile. T_T)

practice practice practice?
such awful tedious and perhaps obvious advice, i know, but i really think that is the only way to speed up. That way you can pin down the specific problem types they ask and know immediately how to do it. Explanations for problems you maybe have to take extra time to consider help too because you can learn the way ETS thinks (evily, of course). Did you have more trouble with the time for math or crit reading or writing?

all verbal section and writing. (esp. writing. i am so horrible at correcting sentenses and stuffs)

work faster....

more specifically, i got a 550 math and 530 verbal... i didnt find the math too difficult.. its just i didnt have much time for it.. i dont know many shortcuts, or at least i didnt implement them

OMG mystic u cant b serious i got the same score in December and then had like a nervous breakdown because i thought i was smart and then the score like shocked me...since i have like the highest grades...ib , honors ect... and i thought id do well but i left like one quarter of the test...:s im taking it in January and the anxiety is already killing me ... are u a junior

I have a simliar "weighted" GPA. But basically with time, just practice. Once you get used to the questions and such it isn't as bad.

lmao.. elodie ya i am IB too and a junior as well.... i am extremely disappointed.. i need a 1270 in order to get a full scholarship to any florida univ.. in addition to a 3.5 weighted which i already have so i really REALLY need a 1270...

lol i have another post similar to this.

lol..well wat can i say great minds think a like!! but lucky u 1270 is realistic...i was told tht to even consider applying to an ivy w/o the whole Process being a total waste of money id have to break thru the 1400 (1350 at least) :s uhu..ya...sureee...ima prolly take the new sat r u?

i was hoping that i wouldnt have to but with such a low first SAT score and if it doesnt severely improve this time, i might have to but then again theres the ACT.. where are you from btw?

egypt..im guessing urfrom the us?

ya i live in northern Florida near jacksonville

how about you guys try to answer more questions right? all of the math ones are extremely straight forward.. just solve them and get like 700 w/ a few careless mistakes...

hi mystic...i understand your situation completely. i went into the sats the first time confident that i would do well since i had always taken honors and ap classes. i did little preparation and bombed them due to lack of timing. i was so used to analyzing questions like i did in my upperlevel classes that i was thinking too hard about the sat. the key thing is to relax and use process of elimination. if you get stuck on a problem MOVE ON. i think that was the hardest thing for me to do because i would play around with it while i could have been answering other questions that were worth the same amount of points. and i know people have already said this but if you practice and time yourself it really does help. good luck!

yeah , thanks alot guys, i figure i should take a few practice tests and i should get the timing right
