Please help settle a dorm room decorating dispute!

At Bama Bound they told us to use 3M Command strips to hang stuff on the walls. Several of my D’s friends at Bama and other schools have told her that the 3M stuff tore up their walls when removed. She was thinking scotch tape would work, but I think it may be a bad idea.

She will be living in Riverside West and is only planning to hang lightweight stuff like posters, etc. No heavy stuff.

Any recommendations from current students or parents in the know? She loves the advice on CC, so I am looking for help!!!

^^^I’m interested in the answer to this question as well. Additionally, do any of you pros out there have any experience with Velcro Sticky Back Poster Hangers, which claim not to damage walls?

i think the 3m works if you remove it properly. if you just rip it off the wall, it will take the wall with!

You have to remove the 3M according to the package instructions. So, keep the package and refer to it in May when the stuff is removed. :)

^^^Ah, I knew it wouldn’t be long before the mother ship arrived to rescue us. Thank you, m2ck!

Thanks for all of the input!

Keep in mind, by the way, that while contact strips can come off a wall without damaging paint, they can be very, very damaging to posters or other items if they aren’t removed carefully. (I learned that lesson last semester the hard way with a vintage, signed Pearl Jam poster, sadly)

hey! my answer didn’t suck!

: (

The 3M command strips worked great for me, especially the hook products. The poster tack I used left a bit of a stain on my walls. The most important thing is to be very careful when removing whatever you use, espcially if its tape. Try blue painters tape if you need to use tape. It wont hurt the wall or the poster if you remove it carefully.

My S’ dorm has rules according to which dorm you’re in (the way the walls are made)

Drywall is pushpins/tacks only (Wierd - I wouldn’t think they’d want all those holes)

Cinderblock (concrete block) walls is the 3M

None can use masking tape, scotch tape, or painters tape.

We are putting 3M hooks in the closet. I guess if we tear it up, we’ll just pay the fee to fix it.

I found those ‘peel & reposition’ things with his college on it. I have a set for the preschool that we move to different walls all the time without any trouble. He plans to use them, worst case scenario, they make him take them down.
