Please help...Should I only apply to colleges with a communications major?

I am trying to narrow down the list of colleges I should attend. I do think I am capable of being admitted to more selective colleges. I am really leaning towards the smaller LAC’s. However, the ones I am liking the most do not have a Comm major or only have it as a minor. Good financial aid is crucial. I was wondering if it would be a better choice to go to a college where I can get a really low tuition then switch to a school that has a communications major for the junior and senior year. However, I am worried that since I want to go to a selective college being a transfer student would be more difficult admissions-wise than just going straight after highschool. Is there another similar major I could be looking at? Can you recommend any colleges? Advice in general?-Thanks in advance.

If your hope is to transfer, why not attend community college first and then transfer?

I have actually toured community colleges in my area, and none of them seemed like a good fit. I think if I am going to leave my area it would be silly not to just go to a 4 year college to start the whole experience.

Well if financial aid is crucial you need to keep in mind transfer students very rarely get need based aid - and really good merit aid is mostly available at 2nd or 3rd tier institutions.

  1. No, you shouldn’t eliminate colleges without a communications major. In many cases, majors themselves are not really that important - unless there’s a clear professional need (e.g., nursing or engineering). Lots of people with non-communications majors go into the field and there are a lot of other ways that you can learn the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in that field. So if you think a college is otherwise a good fit for you and has other majors you can see yourself selecting, go ahead and add it to your list.

Nope. AS mentioned, you get your best financial aid as a freshman applicant, and that’ll follow you through your full time at college if you do well.
