please help to check my daughter's list

Hello everyone,
please help to review my daughter’s school list and hope to get some advice from you guys.
back ground:
SAT:2270
SAT sub: 740 US history, 730 Spanish
GPA: 97.8 (unweighted)/102.3 (weighted)

Reach: Yale, Duke, Pomona
Target: Rice, swarthmore, Emory, Haverford
Safe: Scripps, U of Richmond

we are still searching for safe schools which give generous merit scholarships.

thanks.

What are her extracurriculars?

ECs, AP courses, class rank, type/size of high school, home state, choice of major?

Financial: what is your typical expected family contribution (from the net price calculators), how much can you actually pay per year?

If your daughter is an unhooked caucasian, I’d add a few more schools. I’d call Swarthmore a low reach based on its competitive admissions. Given your daughter likes Swarthmore and Haverford, and seems ok with all female colleges (applying to Scripps) consider an application to Bryn Mawr. They also give some merit aid.

Swat is not a match, it is a reach. Mount Holyoke would be a pretty safe school. Solid academics, beautiful campus, and they may give her significant merit. But it would help to know how much merit she needs (what can you pay)?

We at in Long Island new York. Great school district.
We have prepared 100k for her college.

Can you pay out of salaries in addition to that? Have you run the net price calculators on the school websites at the schools in her list? $100K won’t cover full price at the top schools on her list.

You need to answer the questions in post #2 or I don’t think anyone can give you any opinions.

Good stats, but Swat and Rice are reaches for everyone; Haverford and Emory are getting close to that. For “safer” schools with merit, along with Bryn Mawr and Mount Holyoke in the northeast, maybe look at Rhodes and Trinity (TX) in the south, Puget Sound and Willamette in the northwest, and Denison in the midwest.

Even with merit, a school like Bryn Mawr or Mt. Holyoke may not come down to $25K per year. Without more info on what the net price calculators are showing, it is hard to assess her list. It is possible that every school on the list is unaffordable if there is $100K to spend and no need based aid will be received.

What are her ECs, awards, APs and class rank?

Presume she has completely rule out Cornell? Obviously, since you are instate, she could apply to to the state schools @ Cornell and you (as a parent) would pay a substantially lower in-state tuition.

presidents of NHS Spanish and Latin. 6 years drawing/painting outside school. VP of school magazine. 4 time gold medal of national Spanish exam. volunteer at art school, housing works.

her high school always has a couple of students make to cornell each year but unfortunately she doesn’t like there and we didn’t even visit.

8 AP (4 this year), got all 5. class rank should be in the top 3% even though the school don’t release that info publicly.

her high school was just nominated by US News as the best high school in long island. We are Asian.
She likes to go somewhere warm and a small to medium size schools.
thanks for everyone’s help here.

She should consider putting together and art portfolio and submitting it along with her application. Different schools have different preferences on how they like to have a portfolio submitted so make sure your daughter checks the school’s website for that info.

Did she apply anywhere early? I think you have the schools properly classified (reach, target, safety). Her test scores and grades are good but for schools like Yale, Duke and Pomona her ECs are pretty light (without knowing how good her art portfolio is). She might get into her reach schools though. It will depend on her recs, essays and art portfolio if she has one. Perhaps even her interviews might play a role but typically they don’t count for much. Best of luck to her!

University of Pittsburgh, she might get full tuition. The high SAT, GPA and rank will be in her favor.

Do you know what she wants to major in?

If she applies, make sure the school reports her class rank.

Allegheny College might also give her merit, run the net price calculator and see if the estimated net price is close to $25 k.
