ok so here is my story. I have been admitted to both of these schools and my intended major is kinesiology/exercise physiology. I know both of these schools have their posotives and negatives. First of all I am out of sate for both so both would be expensive, except i have been given an 11k scholarship to umiami, making it cheaper. Academically i am pretty sure michigan conquers miami however as their research and rankings are all much better. Socially I would likely be running Track and Field and Cross Country at Miami which I think would be pretty cool. At Michigan on the other hand I would not make the varsity squad yet they still do have a good running club. I know the football at michigan is awesome and there are lots of other things to do there but the weather in miami really cant be beat! please help me with any advice, i cant make up my mind!

Have you visited these schools? I know it's a hard decision, I remember frantically looking at rankings and such this time last year, but the second I stepped on Michigan's campus, I knew that's where I wanted to be for the next four years and possibly more of my life.

Anyways, honestly, it's a personal decision. What do you want to do with your life? Are sports or academics more important to you? What makes you happy? What about distance? I'm sure you'll make the right decision in the end since you're indecisive about the schools, meaning you like both.

(Yeah...that probably wasn't very helpful...)

well im from virginia so both are a goood disance, i guess miami is further tho...money isnt a huge issue with my family but mich is also more for sure sinnce i got a scholarship to miami. i have visited both and i like miami alot. Michigan is extremely nice as well but it is really really cold there...ahhhhh i really hope i make the right decision soon!

The cultures of the two schools will definitely be different from both each other and Virginia and Miami will have prettier people, which is no big feat. That's what I can say coming from Alabama.

Yeah, like Christine said, the cultures are extremely different. I don't know anything about the exercise science program at Miami, but I do know that the one at Michgan is very good (Kinesiology). There are a significant number of recruited athletes that they stick in the Kinesiology department so they can pass by in easy classes, but if you keep out of certain majors you can avoid them if you want. The culture at michigan is very liberal and "diverse" and as one college guide I read put it, "If there is something to protest, there is someone at Michigan who is protesting it." Miami is something like 27% hispanic, which probably adds to the culture of the school. Both of which, are very different from the culture of the state Virginia I think. The Miami campus is beautiful, and the athletics are great, like they are at Michigan. I think you should base your decision off of where you think you will fit in best, and like your college life the best. Good luck!

Miami just giving you a 11K scholarship does make it less expensive than Michigan, but not by much:

Miami:
Tuition + Fees: 31228
Room + Board: 9334
Scholarship: -11000
Cost: 29562

Michigan:
Tuition + Fees: 29131
Room + Board: 7808
Cost: 36939

It's about 30K less at Miami than Michigan, but if you're paying 120K in total costs, it's not that big of a difference, only about 20%.

Michigan's overall reputation is better, but both Kinesiology schools are among the best in the country. The bigger issue is the environment, Miami will be fun in the sun all year long, Michigan will have fall football games and tailgating, winter sledding and skiing, and you'll experience the seasons. Both have advantages, but you'll be saying to yourself in the winter "dang, I wish I was in Miami right now, i'd be in shorts".

Also, Miami is a much smaller school. Miami has about 10K undergraduate students, Michigan has 25K students. Michigan has about 12K grad students, Miami about 3K. Michigan is 3 times the size of Miami, you'll feel like a number at times, advising won't be personal, classes will be taught by graduate students who you will have difficulty understanding their english, other classes will be 300+ students. Miami will have this as well, but to a much smaller extent.

Michigan is in a college town, where the University is the main attraction. There are things to do, you won't have trouble finding what you want though. However, it's about 40 minutes to any professional sporting event, good plays and entertainment (although you will likely find Ann Arbor to have a good amount) in Detroit and 50 minutes to Windsor, Canada (where you can legally drink, gamble, etc.). Miami is a big city, there's everything you will ever want. You can go to a beach, any sporting event (Heat, Marlins, Dolphins), clubs, all in a few minutes.

They are way different. Miami is a good school, Michigan is a great school. The environments - you choose what you like, I give Miami the edge. Tuition is a slight edge to Miami as well.

I think the decision is all about what YOU want to do, where YOU want to go, where you feel you will have the best time, but also succeed academically and position yourself for a career.
