Please help,
I currently attend University of Maryland, I would be applying for Fall '13 (Junior year). I have ridiculously great extracurricular activities and leadership positions (university senate, president of organizations, etc.), but my GPA at UMD is only a 3.2.

I'm applying to the business school this semester, and if I don't get in, I will be forced to transfer to another school.

What rank school should I be applying for? top 20? 50? 100?

I plan on majoring in finance/accounting.

My high school GPA was a ~3.7.
My SAT's were a 1220

Your GPA is way too low for you to transfer to any reputable school. Especially since youre trying to enter a business school which tend to be competitive no matter where you are. You need to get that GPA above at least a 3.5 before you can consider yourself competitive. Good ECs aren’t enough to compensate.

First thing is do not worry about the ranking of the institution. Focus on the business department on what it has to offer, whether that be academic majors, courses or location.

The problem is I do not know what your GPA is going to be during your sophomore year. I would advise you transfer at the end of your sophomore year in order to get that GPA up. Some good and realistic schools you should consider are William & Mary, good business and fairly high acceptance rate around 40%.

I just think you need to do more research, worrying about ranking is the exact opposite of what you should be doing. It doesnt matter how highly ranked a school is, if it simply does not give you the specific tools you need to succeed then it’s all for not.

btw why exactly do you want to transfer? It seems to me that it would be easier to get into the UMD business school rather than attempting to transfer.

I would prefer to stay at UMD, but I’m not in the b-school yet, so I’m keeping my options open. I was told by my adviser I need a 3.5 GPA to be competitive. I’m trying to be both optimistic and realistic.
