= $1,637

This is through the dell personal purchase web site where i get 12% for going through my school. it's under the preconfigured/recommended systems and says "featured at $1,837" and it's knocked down to "$1,199". i added extra stuff and it came out to be $1,637. is this a good deal? i can't add extra coupons right because i already got the 12% off?

i configured a similar system without going through the personal purchase 12% off thing and just doing it through the normal dell site and it came out to be $1,976. no coupons that i have tried have worked on this system because it says the 20% off coupon isnt applicable with this system. so is $1,637 a good deal? for this system?

also why does the windows xp professional OS cost $150 dollars more then the media edition when the media edition seems to have more features? would the media edition be bad for a school laptop or something?

the first mistake is buying a dell laptop.

i would check with your school to see if you can get xp pro for free or discounted before you go and spend 150 dollars on it. at my school xp pro cost students $5.00. at pitt, it was free.

i also would recommend a 7200 rpm hard drive.

You can get the same setup $500 cheaper through apple.

whats a higher rpm hard drive do?

also how would the mac be cheaper? i've been hearing that dell has the good price, other brands have the quality. do you have a link to a compuer with the same stuff, 500 dollar cheaper?

it'll access your data quicker.

and here is the link for the apples.

<a href="http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=A4791B5D&nclm=MacBook%5B/url%5D">http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=A4791B5D&nclm=MacBook</a></p>

Dell's are fine computers, they have come a long way. That is a pretty good deal for a laptop. I agree, the current standards for Hard Drive is 7200 RPM's, it will access data faster. Windows Media is for if you want to do stuff like have more options communicating with youre xbox 360 or using your computer to watch tv and stuff. It seems that you don't really need XP Professional, it has good features but nothing you use during normal operation. Hope that helps. Also, Macs are great reliable computers, but I recommend you get what you're most comfortable with. Also, if you want to play many games, PC's are better.

I would recommend this one :

<a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7889573&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01174&id=1149205023122%5B/url%5D">http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7889573&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01174&id=1149205023122</a></p>

and i would assume if you wait a week or so it may go onsale for less.

For most people, they shouldn't pay too much extra for a 7200rpm drive. It's faster and thus provides some faster disk access than the slower drive but for most people, they're unlikely to notice much of a difference since most people aren't using a lot of disk intensive applications.
