Cracking the ACT, practice test 1

22:

From this safe haven, the Dadaists hurled ridicule and abuse at nationalism, rationalism, materialism, and any other modern "ism" that they believed had contributed to the breakdown of society and allowed the war.

F. NO CHANGE
G. would hurl
H. hurl
J. were hurling

I've gone through the entire English section reading the explanations and this is the only question i do not understand. I chose G and the answer is F.

Thanks!

Do you see a pattern in the sentence at all with the verbs being used?
HurlED, believED, contributED, allowED
^ They’re all in the past tense. That’s what I’m thinking.

I’d say F unless the preceding sentence contradicts this verb tense.

Preceding sentence:

The loosely knit group found refuge in Zurich, Switzerland, a neutral country.

I see what you’re saying Jenonymous. Is there any grammar “rule” i should be aware of that reinforces this?

No change is the best answer. It is past tense.

“The losely knit group found . . .” That is (past tense) “found.”
