First of all, are you suppose to submit all ACT scores? I haven't found that anywhere in the colleges ds will apply to.

DS has taken the ACT twice. The first time he got a 28 with an 8 on the essay.
He needed a 29 to be considered for a much desired contingent admission for a pharmacy program he is applying to. He scored a 32 this time but was still waiting on the writing score. That is more than enough for this state school and he didn't plan on retaking. Then his writing score came out- 6:( The combined english/writing was a 30.

I asked him how he thought this happened. Writing has always been his strong point. Well, it seems the class that he took for review told him to keep the essay short. Everything I have read on here said that it should be long. He decided to listen to his review class teacher.

The college says the writing portion is required but not used in making the decision. If we only submit the 32 ACT his writing score looks awful- not that an 8 is much better. He isn't able to retake on September 11th because he has auditions for the Cleveland Youth Orchestra on that day and he can't miss that.

Any advice? I asked this on the parents board but didn't necessarily get an answer.

“He needed a 29 to be considered for a much desired contingent admission for a pharmacy program he is applying to”

I think you answered you own question; send the 32…if it makes you feel any better, call the above school and explain your question…if they want to see the 8 they will let you know to send both…but they will absolutely only consider the higher composite score (unless they superscore the ACT which you probably would have known already)…

Unless it is stated somewhere that the pharmacy program wants a “29 with X writing score” you are good to go…

If the writing score is not used in making the decision, then you should send the 32. I would advise sending the 32 even if the writing section WAS part of the decision. Colleges, after all, will be able to assess his writing ability based on his admissions essay- I don’t think an admissions board believes a hastily written and hastily graded essay to be an accurate representation of his writing capabilities.

You only have to submit all ACT scores if the college does not allow score choice. You should search through the college’s website or call them for this information.

Don’t worry; he got a great score, and the writing section will have little to no effect.

I believe the writing for Ohio Northern could be used for placement of the English requirement. I would call the admissions office to see if they will combine scores. I know that some of the schools that S is considering do that, though they don’t spell it out on their website. Good luck with the pre-pharmacy program. has he considered Drake and Butler?
